As a nation has the largest oversea Chinese population among the southeastcountries, Indonesia has a broad space to develop Chinese language teaching. Chinese istaught in every stage of the education system in Indonesia. However, there are manyproblems restrict the Chinese education there, such as teachers, textbooks, and teachingconditions. As a popular teaching method which can promote the communicationbetween teacher and student, group work provide new means for Chinese education inIndonesia. This study investigates the design and practice of the group work in the caseof Grade7at Kalam Kudus school Jakarta, so as to address the problems in Chineseeducation in Indonesia as well as to promote Chinese education worldwide.This thesis first introduces its research background, purposes, significance,methodology and structure. Related terms are defined according to ideas of expertscholars, and then the thesis reviews the literature drawing on the studies ingroup workas well as instructional designs for Chinese course. The review shows that although thegroup work has been widely used in China and other foreign countries, it is still at theexploratory stage in the field of teaching Chinese as a second language, and the studiesin group work in the field of teaching Chinese as a second language are rare. Thus, thisstudy discusses the feasibility as well as merits and drawbacks of group work forChinese course in Indonesian.The writer has made the teaching schemes in the case of the lesson four and lessonfive of “Conversational Chinese301” to show the the detailed procedures of group workfor Indonesia Chinese course, and employed questionnaire to investigate the effect ofgroup work. In addition, the thesis summarizes the practice of group work for Chinesecourse.Through the experiment of group work for half a semester, together with theanalysis of questionnaire and interviews on teaching effects, the study arrives at theconclusion: Group work shows advantages in cultivating students’ positive learningstrategies and attitude, enhancing students’ abilities, building a harmoniousteacher-student relationship and thus promoting the quality of Chinese teaching inIndonesia.Finally, the problems in such aspects as teaching design, teaching process and teaching effects during the practice of group work for Chinese course are reflected, andthen some ideas and suggestions are proposed for further researches.
