Objective:To evaluate the association of inflammatory severity between the appendiceal orifice inflammation(AOI) and the ulcerative colitis(UC).Methods:A retrospective analysis for the cases which were diagnosed as UC from August2002 to May 2014 was conducted to investigate the correlation of the severity of inflammation between AOI and UC by linear trend test. And some cases in follow-up status would be collected to clarify the changes of AOI and the inflammation of UC.Results:Among the total 991 UC cases, 260 cases were diagnosed as AOI, which accounted for 27.5% of the total cases examined; The positive rates of AOI were 29.2% and 24.8%in male and female patients respectively, which implied little difference in gender.Furthermore, the rate between several groups based on endoscopic severity standard obtained χ2=27.39(P<0.05), the difference was statistically significant. Moderate and severe AOI positive rates were 30.2% and 29.8%(P>0.0125), respectively, and showed higher value than the mild rate of 4.3%( P < 0.0125). In linear regression analysis, regression coefficient was b=0.32, χ2return=29.48(P<0.05)and χ2partial=31.66(P<0.05),which proved a positive correlation between the two drawn existed but not a simple linear relationship.19 cases of UC-AOI(ulcerative colitis with appendiceal orifice inflammation)completely obtain mucosal healing after 3 months to 5 years. 3 cases only appeared AOI before the relapse of UC.Conclusion:Endoscopists should be careful with appendiceal orifice during the observation of colonscopy. And AOI is a sign in some active UC patients. Its severity of inflammation can reflect the degree of inflammation in UC, which may offer a terminal point when treat a slice of UC individuals and give a signal of its relapse.
