Objective : The aim of this study was to compare the effect of levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system(Mirena@) and Medroxyprogesterone in peri-menopausal abnormal uterine bleeding.Methods:Sixty-five perimenopausal patients with abnormal uterine bleeding were divided into Medroxyprogesterone group(n=35)and Mirena group(n=33). Mirena group placed Mirena ring after Endometrial biopsy five days. If the patient feel no obvious discomfort, to be removed when the patient has reached menopause hormone levels. 8mg MPA taken 10 days per cycle for three months in the Medroxyprogesterone acetate group. The effective rate, endometrial thickness, hemoglobin were compared between the two groups after treatment by telephone or outpatient manner. Results: The effective rates were 89% in Mirena group and 75% in the Medroxyprogesterone(P<0.05) after three months treatment. The concentration of hemoglobin significantly increased in the both groups, especially in Mirena group(P<0.05).The endometrial thickness all became thinner, the difference was not statistically significant(P>0.05) There was no significant side effect in the both group. Conclusion: Both Mirena and Medroxyprogesterone are safe and effective in treatment of peri-menopausal abnormal uterine bleeding, especially Mirena.
