Objective: To expore the olfactory bulb(OB) volume difference between patients with Parkinson’s disease(PD) and health controls by using MRI.Method: Databases(PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library and CNKI, up to Mar 2016) were searched for related literatures further filtered by inclusion and exclusion criterion. Newcastle-Ottawa Scale was used to evaluate quality of the literatures. Right, Left olfactory bulb volume were involved in this meta-analysis with random effect model. Meanwhile, subgroup analyses were performed based on Country and intensity of MRI. Publication bias were determined by Egger’s test. Results: 9 case-control studies were obtained, involving 326 PD patients and 254 health controls. The results showed that in PD patients, there existed a significant difference in OB volume compared with healthy participants. In addition, in PD patients, the right OB was larger than the left OB while no significant difference was detected in healthy controls. Conclusions: The left and right olfactory bulb volume were statistically smaller than healthy control. However, due to the significant heterogeneity, futher more studies are needed to support the results.
