Objective: The purpose of this paper was to provide an overview of clinical studies regarding clinical effects of fiber posts versus metal posts in the restoration of the residual roots and crowns using meta-analysis for better clinical treatment in the future. Methods: The relevant randomized control trials(RCT) were searched from Database such as Pubmed, Cochrane Library, EMbase,VIP, CNKI, as well as CBM up date to December, 2015. The qualified literature was picked out under certain inclusion criteria and exclusion criteria by two post- graduates separately. The meta-analysis was conducted by Rev Man 5.2 software after quality evaluation. The publication bias was described by Funnel Figure. Results: Eleven RCTs were enrolled including 10 C hinese literature and 1 English literature. The main index of outcome by meta-analysis showed that Fiber post had more higher success rate in the restoration of the residual roots and crowns than metal post with statistical significance(RR=1.17, 95%CI(1.12,1.22), P<0.00001), lower post-abscission incidence rate with statistical significance(RR=0.52, 95%CI(0.29,0.91), P=0.02), meanwhile it had lower incidence of root fracture with statistical significance(RR=0.10, 95%CI(0.04,0.25), P<0.00001), as well as lower Gingivitis incidence rate with statistical significance(RR=0.24, 95%CI(0.10,0.55), P=0.0008), and lower gingival crest coloring incidence rate with statistical significance(RR=0.13, 95%CI(0.04,0.38), P=0.0002), while fiber post had a more higher crown fracture incidence rate than metal post with no statistical significance(RR=1.28, 95%CI(0.56,2.90), P=0.56).Conclusions: Fiber post had a higher success rate in the restoration of the residual roots and crowns compared with metal post, and not prone to evoke root fracture, gingivitis and gingival crest coloring. fiber post had a more higher crown fracture incidence rate than metal post with no statistical significance.
