In the essay, we summarized the National TCM Master Zhou Zhong-ying’s thinking of Gubi (Osteoarthritis) with the syndrome of kidney deficiency and obstruction in coll aterals from the theoretical and clinical aspects, and observed the clinical efficacy of kn ee osteoarthritis through the treatment of benefiting kidney and removing obstruction in collaterals. In the theoretical discussion part, we discussed the clinical experience and academic thoughts of professor Zhou Zhong-ying in treating osteoarthritis from the etiology, pathogenesis, treatment and medication points of view. We think that Gubi is caused by aging and weakness, or overwork, or improper nursing after diseases, which lead to the essence and blood deficiency of liver and kidney. The main therapeutic principles are complementing the liver and kidney, promoting the flexibility of joint, removing the wind pathogens and blocking, Invigorating the circulation of blood. Some Traditional Chinese Medicine are used to treat the disease, such as Taxillus sutchuenensis (Lecomte) Danser, Davallia mariesii Moore ex Bak, Aerva sanguinolenta (Linn.) Blume, Dipsacus japonicus Miq etc.In the clinical observation part, we collected 60 patients with knee osteoarthritis who meet the clinical diagnostic criteria of Chinese and Western Medicine. The patients are divided into two groups:the treatment group and the control group with 30 cases each. The treatment group were prescribed Gubi Prescription (more than eight herbs were used such as Taxillus sutchuenensis (Lecomte) Danser, Craspedolobium schochii Harms, Dipsacus japonicus Miq etc, with modifications according to the the patients symptoms and syndromes). The control group were given Glucosamine Sulfate (Viartril-S). If necessary, patients can take celecoxib to relieve pain. Three months is considered as a course of treatment. TCM syndrome accumulating points, VAS score, WOMAC index, etc were recorded to compare the curative effect of two groups before and after the three-month treatment. Adverse reactions were also observed. Conclusion:The Gubi Prescription can obviously relieve the symptoms, such as knee joint pain, swelling, stiffness and joint flexion and extension of patients of knee osteoarthritis with the syndrome of kidney deficiency and obstruction in collaterals. The total effective rate of treatment group in TCM syndrome accumulating points, VAS score and WOMAC index is higher than those of the control group, which indicates that the Gubi Prescription has an obvious curative effect to knee osteoarthritis with kidney deficiency and obstruction in collaterals, by relieving the patients’ joint pain, and improving activity function and quality of life. The Gubi Prescription is the clinical experienced formula of Professor Zhou Zhong-ying, which has a general guidance to the improvement of the disease’s prognosis. |
