[Objectives]To study the curative effect of the prescription of tonifying kidney anddredging collaterals on Knee Osteoarthritis(KOA), and make a preliminary study on theeffect of the matrix metalloproteinases( MMP)-3 to the KOA.[Methods]We divided the patients into two groups randomly. One is KOA group, while theother is normal group. During 4 weeks' treatment (just one course of treatment), weobserved the signs and symptoms before and after treatment dynamically. By the ways ofusing the Indexes of Osteoarthritis(ISOA) to score and the quantitative schedule ofTraditional Chinese Medical symptoms to quantify and assess, we could analyse the curativeeffect. On the other hand, using the ELISA, we could make a mensuration and comparationof the MMP-3 between the KOA group and the normal group before the treatment.[Results] 1.The ISOA score, which was expressed by (?)±s, was 8.76±3.75 before treatmentand 3.75±3.48 after treatment. There was significant difference between them(p<0.05).2.The score of Traditional Chinese Medical symptoms was 20.76±5.43 before treatment and8.59±6.98 after treatment. There was significant difference between them(p<0.05).3. Theexcellent rate of the prescription was 47.36%, and the total effective rate is 86.84%.4.According to symptoms'score, the KOA patients' conditions were graded. And therelationship between the degree of illness and the curative effect was observed, whichsuggested that the correlation exsisted(p<0.05). Compared with the heavy condition, theprescription was more effective to treat the patients in the light and moderate conditions.5.There was correlation between the condition of illness, the age and the course. With theage and the course of illness increasing, the KOA patient's condition was aggravating.6.The density of the MMP-3 in blood serum, was (80.35±10.58)ng/ml for the KOA groupbefore treatment and (50.11±5.39) ng/ml for the normal group. There was significantdifference between them(p<0.05). [Conclusions] 1.The prescription of tonifying kidney and dredging collaterals can lower theKOA patients' ISOA score and their Traditional Chinese Medical symptoms score. That is to say, it reduces the patients' ache, and improves the joint function. 2. Thisprescription is more effective for the light and the moderate condition. 3. With the age andthe course of illness increasing, the KOA patient's condition is aggravating. 4. MMP-3contributes to OA's occurrence.
