BackgroundAllergic rhinitis is mainly a allergic disease triggered by certain allergen. The acupuncture treatment for allergic rhinitis appeared to be of great advance. Treatment of variety and traditional acupuncture full of distinguishing features are combined very well within the category of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The acupuncture treatment is a low-cost, easy-operated, efficient, pain-reduced treatment which can be put into practice by various means. And the treatment isof high efficacy. The prevalence rate in our country is about 5% to 15% and the number is growing higher in recent years. Glucocorticoid, mast cell stabilizer, antihistaminic and some other drugs are mainly used for allergic rhinitis within the category of modern medicine, which could cause plenty of untoward reactions. After the medical treatement, the symptoms could return and the disease is hard to be cured due to the individual differences. Thus, to develop a new operable effective external treatment become of great value.ObjectivesIn this randomized controlled study, the clinical result of treating allergic rhinitis with line medicine moxibustion combined with eletroacupuncture was observed, as well as the improvement of the patients’ life quality. This study was designed to find if there is more clinical evidence for line medicine moxibustion, in order to improve the practice in clinic, and to find if there is a easy-operated, convenient, cheap treating programs for allergic rhinitis.MethodsThe patients were chosen according to the diagnostic criteria to exclude those who met exclusion criteria. Those who met the inclusion criteria were given a number by sequence (1-60). The patients were randomly divided into two groups, each containing 30 members. The treated group took the therapy of line medicine moxibustion combined with eletroacupuncture, while the control group took the therapy of eletroacupuncture. The eletroacupuncture acupoints include "Jin’s nasal three needles":Yingxiang (LI20), Shangyingxiang (EX-HN8) and Yintang (EX-HN3), as well as Cuanzhu (B2), Hegu (LI4), Fengchi (G20).The acupoints are also chosen according to the actual symptoms. The line medicine moxibustion took the acupoints in turns: 1. Yingxiang (LI20), Xiayingxiang (EX-HN9) Baihui (GV20), Yintang (EX-HN3), Erxue Neibidian, acupoints on the Governor Channel from Dazhui (GV14) to Yaoshu (GV2); 2. Cuanzhu (B2), Shangyingxiang (EX-HN8), Fengchi (G20) as well as Erxue Waibidian, Xia Guanyuan, Back-shu acupoint of the Urinary Bladder Meridian of Foot-Taiyang(BL11-BL28). Before and after the treatment, the evaluation of the treatment effect was made according to the differences between the two scores of the symptoms and the signs. And the evaluation of the life quality was made according to the rhinoconjunctivitis Quality of Life Questionnaire (RQLQ).Results1、The data of the research object:60 cases were finally collected, including 30 cases in the line medicine moxibustion combined with eletroacupuncture group (treatment group) and 30 cases in the eletroacupuncture group (control group). A total of medicine thread line medicine moxibustion combined with electroacupuncture group 30 cases, simple acupuncture group 30 cases. The baseline comparison was made before the treatmentbetween the group of the line medicine moxibustion combined with eletroacupuncture group and the group of eletroacupuncture, no statistical significance was found in the demographic figures such as the gender composition, age and duration of illness (P>0.05), implying the two groups were comparable. Before and after treatment, the scores of the symptoms, signs, and RQLQ didn’t fit the normal distribution after the K-S test was run (P<0.05). Thus non-parametric tests should be run.2、Efficacy Analysis:After three courses of treatment, the two groups were compared and the datas were statistical tested. Among the 30 cases of the line medicine moxibustion combined with eletroacupuncture group,23 cases appeared to be significantly effective,6 cases appeared to be effecive, 1 case appeared to be ineffective, Among the 30 cases of the line medicine moxibustion combined with eletroacupuncture group,10 cases appeared to be significant effect,19 cases appeared to be effecive,1 case appeared to be ineffective, Comparing the symptoms and the signs before the treatment with those after the treatment of both groups, statistical significances was found (P<0.05). Which implied both treatments could improve the patients’ life quility who were diagnosed with allergic rhinitis. Comparing the effect of the line medicine moxibustion combined with eletroacupuncture group by running rank-sum test, the symptoms and the signs after the treatment of the two groups showed significantly difference, which implied the line medicine moxibustion combined with eletroacupuncture significantly more effective than eletroacupuncture alone.3. Life Quality Analysis:comparing the RQLQ before the treatment with those after the treatment of both groups, the scores showed significantly difference (P<0.05). Which implied both treatment could improve the patients’ life.4、 Sifty figures:during the treatment trials, the Treatment group occur one case that when using line medicine moxibustion treatment, a person appear from the a small blister and local lesions were found. No further acupuncture and line medicine moxibustion were operated on this site, It took about 3 days for blisters absorption, crusted lesion forms. And the patient still completed all next trials. No adverse reaction was reported in the control group. In summary, line medicine moxibustion combined with eletroacupuncture is safe to be used to treat allergic rhinitis.Above all, the effect of the treatment of line medicine moxibustion combined with eletroacupuncture is solid, and appeared to be more advanced on approving the symptoms and the clinical effects. The treatment could reduce the symptoms efficiently without untoward reactions, The symptoms hardly return. The treatment is of great compliance, and worth to spread over the clinic.ConclusionBoth line medicine moxibustion combined with eletroacupuncture and eletroacupuncture alone can reduce the symptoms, signs, and improve the patients’ life. After the randomized controlled study, line medicine moxibustion combined with eletroacupuncture has more significant effect than the eletroacupuncture alone. Thus, the treatment program for allergic rhinitis should be spread and put into practice over the clinic since the line medicine moxibustion combined with eletroacupuncture is convenient and effective.
