With the rapid modernization of the army, various new types of vehicles and portable communication systems have been equipped in troops, which played an important role in enhancing the combat effectiveness of the soldiers. Communication equipment vehicle as a separate combat cabin owns its unique hygiene characteristics: the space in cabins is narrow and airtight, and the air in the space is difficult to circulate, as well as heavy density of operating personnel in the cabins. Electromagnetic radiation in the communication equipment may be the most important harmful factor excepted for other factors such as harmful gases, dust, noise, vibration, fume, high temperature and humidity, ect. Long term exposure of these factors may have adverse effects on the military operational capability and health of soldiers. The data of domestic and foreign research related in this field indicated that a series of changes in the nerve behavior of human can be produced under the long-term exposure of the electromagnetic field, such as the decline in behavioral function, slowing down in reaction, anxiety and depression, etc. However, at present, researches related to the influence of high frequency electromagnetic radiation on the military operation ability, especially the ability of nerve behavior in our military communications operators are rather rare. In order to understand the exposure level of electromagnetic radiation pollution in the main operating cabins of our military communications forces and the influence of electromagnetic radiation on the health and the behavior ability of the workers, we carried out a survey of a whole group of 700 people from Chengdu area command in August to March this year. The contents of the survey conclude the exposure level of electromagnetic radiation, the status of general health and the mental health. Additionally, with the unified exclusion and inclusion criteria, the neural behavioral ability of 232 soldiers selected as the control group and 326 soldiers selected as the observation group were tested with NES-C3.The main results were as follows:1. The results of the survey on general health status(1) There are no significant differences of the subjective symptom incidence in the main system except for reproductive system between the two groups(P>0.05);(2) Compared with the control group, the incidence of subjective symptom such as headache, dizziness, vertigo, tinnitus, back pain, general weakness and palpitation increased significantly in the observation group(P<0.05);(3) The incidence of dizziness is highest(76, 23.3%) in the observation group under the condition of window-closed training; and lectromagnetic radiation is respected as the primary cause of discomfort symptoms under the condition of window-closed training(98, 30.1%).2. The results of SCL-90 analysis(1) Compared with the control group, the scores of obsessive compulsive symptoms, depression, anxiety, terror, paranoia, psychosis, and the total score, the number of positive items were significantly increased in the observation group(P<0.05);(2) The scores of the ten factors in the observation group were significantly lower than those of military norm(P<0.01); and the score of sensitivity, depression, hostility, paranoia, and the total score, as well as the number of positive items, were significantly lower than those of the local norm(P<0.05);(3) The incidence of psychological problems in the observation group was significantly higher than that in the control group(26.4%, 17.5%, P=0.017);3. The results of NES-C3 tests(1) The density of high frequency electromagnetic radiation at workplaces is as follows: The average density in the operating unit of the observation group was significantly higher than that in the control group [(2.61±1.59) m W/m2,(0.25±0.43) m W/ m2, P<0.01)], but far lower than the national health standards GB1043-89(50 W/cm2).(2) Compared to the control group, the neurobehavioral ability indices of serial addition and subtraction, visual retention, digital retrieval, and listening digit span in the observation group were significantly increased(P<0.01, P<0.05, P<0.01, P<0.05);(3) Within the 4 groups of different length of military service, the NAI of auditory digit span and auditory simple reaction time in the group of <2 years in observation group decreased significantly compared with that in control group(P<0.05);(4) Within the six different majors, the NAI of mental arithmetic in Major 5 was lower significantly than that in Major 1,2 and 3(P<0.05, P<0.01, P<0.01), and the NAI of memory scanning in Major 5 was significantly lower than that in Major 2(P<0.05); and the NAI of auditory simple reaction time in Major 5 was significantly lower than any other majors(P<0.05, P<0.01, P<0.01, P<0.01, P<0.01).In conclusion, the intensity of electromagnetic radiation in the communication units was extremely low and much lower than the national health standards. The incidence of subjective symptom in nervous system was highest in the observation group, but compared with control group, the incidence of subjective symptom in any system didn’t increase significantly. The incidence of psychological problems in the observation group was significantly higher than that in the control group. However, the neurobehavioral ability in the observation group were significantly increased compared with control group. The research above provides us with scientific basis on real situation of electromagnetic radiation pollution, elimination of bad psychological panic in communication troops and further enhancement of the operational capacity of the operator.
