Introduction: With the rapid increase in number of mobile phone users all over theworld, the possible any adverse effects on brain function of the electromagnetic radiationemitted by mobile phone have become a serious concern. it was also unsolved questionwhether mobile phone radiation would impact human’s health and what was its impactmechanisms, how to protective its injures. Objective: We observe cognitive impairment and brain tissue damage in rats afterelectromagnetic fields exposed and the probably reason to caused it.Materials and Methods: A total of48male Sprague-Dawley rats were exposed to a900MHz,1mW/cm2EMF or sham exposed for3h per day for14or28days. After theexperimental period, animals were tested for spatial memory performance using the Morriswater maze test. Morphological changes were investigated by examining ultrastructuralchanges in the hippocampus CA1and cortex. Albumin extravasation over the BBB,neuronal albumin uptake and neuronal oxidative stress were assessed. Results: The frequency of crossing platform and the percentage of time spent in thetarget quadrant were lower in the exposed28days rats compared with the exposed14daysrats and sham-irradiated rats on the memory retention day. The ultrastructural changesincluded cellular edema and cell organ degenerations in the radiated rats. electromagneticfields radiation cause HO-1immunostaining positive in hippocampus and cortex, alsoincreased the permeability of the blood-brain barrier (BBB), resulting in albuminextravasations at14and28days.Conclusion: These results indicated900MHz electromagnetic fields radiation cansignificantly impair spatial memory, induced ultras-tructure changes and enhance oxidativestress level in the cortex and hippocampus CA1region. This impairment could relate to theincreasing of the BBB permeability by microwave radiation.
