Objective:Restless legs syndrome(RLS) is a neurologic sensorimotor disorder characterized by an irresistible urge to move the legs, accompanied by unpleasant physical sensation, which often results in sleep disorders. This syndrome often secondary to end-stage renal disease(ESRD) treated with hemodialysis. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of RLS and the potential related factors in hemodialysis patients. Methods:From June to December in 2014, we recruited a total of 113 patients with ESRD from First Clinical Hospital of Shanxi Medical University in a cross-sectional design.General information, laboratory and the clinical data were collected, and analyzed by multivariate logistic regression method. Results:In our study of 113 HD patients(67men;46Women), twenty-two patients(19.47 %) were diagnosed with RLS. Patients with and without RLS were compared using SPSS statistical software(Version 17.0). The regression analysis showed that high β2 microglobulin(OR,1.089,[95%CI,1.002-1.184]),low urine(OR,0.997, [95%CI, 0.994-0.999]),and history of cardiac disease(OR,7.009,[95%CI, 2.235-21.980]) were associated with RLS in the HD patients, while Primary kidney disease, renal failure pathology, duration of dialysis, creatinine, blood urea nitrogen,PTH,electrolytes, the history of hypertension etc. were unrelated. SAS, SDS scores were significantly higher than the RLS-negative patients in patients with RLS.Patients with RLS has higher transferrin(1.86±0.33 vs. 2.12±0.24;P<0.001)than patients without RLS, while serum iron, transferrin saturation has no significant difference. RLS-positive patients had more sleep complains, such as shorter sleep duration, and higher incidence of difficulty falling sleep, insomnia, daytime sleepiness and sedative-hypnotic medication usage(P<0.05). Conclusions:Hemodialysis patients have a high prevalence of RLS, so clinicians should have a high suspicion for the presence of RLS symptoms in patients with ESRD, especially those with cardiac diseases. Several causes involved in its pathogenesis. The specific mechanism remains to be further research.
