Objectives The purpose of this study was to evaluate the apical sealing ability and marginal adaptation of a new bioceramic material iRoot BP Plus as retrograde filling material when compared with mineral trioxide aggregate, providing the theoretical basis for clinical treatment.Methods The cornal portion of forty five single-rooted freshly extracted human teeth were removed.All canals were prepared up to F2 with Protaper rotary device using a crown-down technique.Then the apical 3 mm were resected and root-end cavities with depth of 3 mm were prepared with ultrasound.Teeth were divided into three groups:retrofilled with mineral trioxide aggregate(n=20) and iRoot BP Plus (n=20),negative control group (n=5) received no retrofill.The marginal adaptation between apical plugs and the root canal walls were analyzed by scanning electron microscope(n=3).Other specimens were immersed in 0.2% Rhodamine B solution for 48h,the teeth were sectioned longitudinally and observed by stereomicroscope for dye penetration(n=17).The data were analyzed with t-test. Statistically siganificant differences was set at α=0.05.Results The specimens in the negative control group showed no dye penetration. The samples retrofilled with two materials all have different levels of dye penetration.The dye penetration means were MTA(0.90±0.84mm) and iRoot BP Plus (1.06±0.88mm).Statistical analysis showed that there was no significant difference between MTA and iRoot BP Plus.The scanning electron microscope examination revealed that the mean gap between MTA and dentin wall was 2.836±1.726μm,the gap between iRoot BP Plus and dentin wall was 2.922±1.724μm.T test showed that no significant difference was found between MTA and iRoot BP Plus.Conclusions iRoot BP Plus had a similar sealability to that of MTA in preventing dye leakage as a root-end filling material.iRoot BP Plus is a putty ready-to-use cement. It has many advantages,such as convenient, user-friendly and cheaper than MTA.We can consider iRoot BP Plus as a endodontical material in clinical application,but it’s clinical effects need more studys.
