Background:With changes in diet and lifestyle, obesity has been increasing worldwide. Meanwhile, the number of patients with lumbar disc herniation has been increasing as well, which results in a great number of back pain patients. There are some research for degeneration of lumbar at home and abroad, but little correlation between obesity and calcification of lumbar intervertebral disc. This study was designed to explore the relationship between them by observing the rates of calcification of herniated lumbar disc in patients who with different body mass index.Method:Select195patients of lumbar disc herniation who were underwent surgery at Zhejiang University Affiliated Sir Run Run Shaw hospital between January2012-December2014as the research object. Statistics of the patient’s gender, height and body weight, and body mass index calculated accordingly. Patients were divided into three groups according to BMI:normal group BMI<24, overweight group with a BMI of 24-28, obese group BMI>28. Calcification rate of disc were observed among different groups, and the relationship between disc calcification and these factors like gender and age were analyzed within groups.Result:The distribution of age, gender was no significant difference between groups (P>0.05), and there’s also no significant difference among groups with the near age (P>0.05). The mean BMI in obese group was30.32±4.41, with calcification rate of54.5%; overweight group BMI average of25.67±1.09, calcification rate of38.0%; normal group BMI average of21.64±1.60, calcification rate of26.9%. The statistical results were as follows:There are significant differences between obese group and normal group (p<0.05), but there are no significant differences between obese group and overweight group, and between overweight group and normal group (P>0.05).Conclusion:Calcification Rate of Herniated Lumbar Disc is higher in patients with hypernormal BMI (BMI>28) than those in normal weight patients. Obesity may be one of the important factors in causing of lumbar disc calcification.
