Objectives:Based on literature review and the tutor’s experience, acupuncture or ear pressure treatment combined with self-massage regime were employed for 12 weeks to observe their preventive and therapeutic effects on boarder-line and Grade 1 hypertension patients.Methods:Boarder-line and Grade 1 hypertension patients from the local community were randomly divided into observation group 1 (acupuncture group), observation group 2 (ear-pressure group) and control group (self-massage), each group contains 30 boarder-line high blood pressure cases and 30 grade I hypertension patients. The objects in massage group were taught a self-massage exercise that performed twice a day. Besides the self-massage exercise, patients in Acupuncture and Ear-Pressure groups were given conventional acupuncture or ear pressure interventions, respectively. All objects in the three groups were advised to monitor body weight, limit salt and alcohol consumption, and to improve the life style based on theory of traditional Chinese medicine. The values of blood pressures of each participating objects were recorded at 4,8, and 12 weeks for comparison and analysis.Result:(1) Both systolic and diastolic blood pressures in all groups were significantly ameliorated after12-week treatment compared to that before treatment (P< 0.05), suggesting the therapeutic influences in all of the three groups on boarder-line high blood pressure and grade I hypertension patients. (2) Acupuncture and ear pressure treatments exhibited significant superior effects in lowering diastolic blood pressure to the control massage group (p< 0.05) on boarder-line high blood pressure crowd, although there was no significant difference between acupuncture and ear-pressure groups (P> 0.05). (3) Acupuncture and ear-pressure groups resulted in an obvious antihypertension effects at 8-week; and the massage group showed therapeutic effect 12-week. (4) The overall effective rates to the boarder-line objects were 82.76%(massage group),88.89% (acupuncture group), and 82.14%(ear-pressure group); while among the Grade 1 hypertension patients the overall effective rates were 71.42%,81.48%,and 78.57%, respectively. Conclusion:All three interventions effectively reduced blood pressure on boarder-line and grade I hypertension patients. While self-massage exercise effectively controlled the blood pressures at 12-week assessment, addition of acupuncture or ear-pressure treatment better strengthened the anti-hypertension therapeutic effects, starting at 8th week.
