ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical reliability and validity of the Chinese version of the Neurological Disorders Depression Inventory for Epilepsy (NDDI-E) and investigate risk factors in adult patients with epilepsy and depressive disorder.MethodAll the adult patients with epilepsy were randomly selected from the epilepsy clinic of the Second Affiliated Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine between November20,2012and April30,2013. They were enrolled to evaluate the presence of depressive disorder by using the Chinese verion of Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI), the Chinese verion of the Neurological Disorders Depression Inventory for Epilepsy(NDDI-E) and the Chinese verion of the Beck Depression Inventory-Ⅱ (BDI-Ⅱ). The MINI was used as the gold standard for the diagnosis of current depressive disorder. The clinical reliability and validity of the Chinese version of the NDDI-E were evaluated in this study. The BDI-II was used as criterion to assess the critertion validity of the Chinese version of the NDDI-E. Demographic variables for age, gender, employment status, marital status, years of education, and seizure factors for age of onset, types of seizure, seizure frequency, epilepsy duration, species of antiepileptic drugs were also recorded. We compared the differences of risk factors between the two groups with or without depressive disorder.ResultAll patients had no difficulties understanding and completing the Chinese verion of the NDDI-E. At a cutoff score≥14, the Chinese verion of the NDDI-E had a sensitivity of0.854, a specificity of0.899, a positive predictive value of0.625and a negative predictive value of0.969for diagnosis of depressive disorder. It’s Cronbach’s a was0.824. The scores of the Chinese verion of the NDDI-E had a positive correlation those of the Chinese verion of the BDI-II (Spearman’s p=0.724). There were no statistical differences in age, gender, employment status, marital status, years of education, seizure type(exclude partial complex), seizure frequency and species of drugs between the two groups with or without depressive disorder. But there were statistical differences in age of onset, duration and partial complex between the two groups with or without depressive disorder. Further multivariate analysis showed partial complex was the independent risk factor in adult patients with epilepsy and depressive disorder. Conclusion:The Chinese version of the NDDI-E is simple, rapid and effective. It can be used as a practical screening tool to improve recognition of depressive disorder in adult patients with epilepsy. Partial complex maybe the independent risk factor in adult patients with epilepsy and depressive disorder.
