Objective:Body composition refers to the total weight of the body in the constituent rations of different body composition, mainly including body fat percent (PBF), fat mass(FM), lean body mass(FFM), muscles, bone mass and ratio of total body water, etc. Children are in the growth development period, so the body composition also shows the tendency of dynamic change. Body composition, to a certain extent, can be reflected by various factors, such as age, gender, regional, ethnic, growth and development, nutrition level, economic level and physical exercise, etc. This study was to explore the development regularities and characteristics of child and adolescent body composition in Dalian, to provide scientific basis for their healthy growth, to provide basic evidence for nutritional status and healthcare, and accumulate dynamic date for evaluation of children’s growth and development in the future. Methods:Two primary schools%two secondary schools and one high school in Dalian were sampled, where four classes were taken from each grade, and2027students who were aged from6-18years were systematically collected. The sampled students were given height test, while weight and body composition were examined with bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). Height was measured by a metal height meter, while weight and body composition were measured by a MC-180type body composition measurement instrument which was made in Japan. Overweight and obesity were determined by PBF. Overweight:female24%-30%, male21%-25%; obesity: female>30%and>25%for male. Height and weight, PBF, BMI and lean body mass of students in Dalian were respectively compared with that of students in Dalian in2000, in Guangzhou and Beijing in2005. Results:1. Height, weight, body fat percent(PBF), fat mass(FM), lean body mass(FFM), muscles, bone mass, BMI and basal metabolism rate of the students increase from6-18years in Dalian, and the growth curves of boys and girls appear rising tendency, while the percentage of total body water decrease. The growth curves of PBF, FM and ratio of total body water had two crosses, and crossover occurred around the age of11. The growth curve of FFM muscles and basal metabolism rate showed a trend of parallel development at the age of6to11, and bones growth curve was a overlapping curve between6and12years. The above indicators showed an obvious difference in growth trend after the age of11-12.2. The muscles, lean body mass and basal metabolism rate were obvious sex differences among all the age groups, and the others were sex difference in part of ages.3. The height and body weight in Dalian aged7-18years increased with a large scope in2012compared with those in2000.4. The body fat percent and BMI of students in Dalian aged7-18years were higher than those in Guangzhou, and lean body mass were higher than those in Beijing.5. The obesity rate of girls was24.9%, while the boys’ was24.4%.Conclusion:1. The findings were consistent with the growth characteristics of adolescent boys and girls aged6-18years in Dalian.2. The muscles, lean body mass and basal metabolism rate were obvious sex differences among all the age groups, and the others were sex difference in part of ages.3. The height and weight were higher in2012than those in2000, and there were differences between ages, which stated that the nutritional level has been improved.4. The body fat percent, BMI and fat mass were higher in Dalian than those in Bejing and Guangzhou.5. The obesity rate of students in Dalian was higher than the government standard, tackling child obesity is important.
