Purpose: Irritable bowel syndrome is a common functional disease worldwide. They have becomemore prevalent with the global process of social and economic development. Functionalgastrointestinal disorders are characterized by abdominal pain or discomfort with altered bowel habits,but without any organic damages to the intestine such as tumor or inflammation. They have asignificant negative impact on health-related quality of life and result in high health care expenditures.Patients suffering from functional gastrointestinal disorders are badly bothered with both somatic andmental problems. This research aims to estimate the prevalence and associated factors involved in IBSin Shihezi University majoring in different postgraduates using the Rome III criteria. To discussdifferent professional master graduate student in shihezi university(Literature, medicine and science)between incidence of IBS and influence factors. In order to further explore the onset of highlyeducated talents IBS and its relationship between related factors and mental factors, to provide thetheoretical basis. To provide reference for clinical prevention and treatment of IBS.Methods: Questionnaire for1000students including medical postgraduates literature postgraduatesand psychology postgraduates. The patients were assessed using the ZUNG self-rating anxiety scale,ZUNG self-rating depression scale, life event scale and social support rating scale. The results werestatistically analyzed with investigation time from December2012to June2013.Results: A total of valid questionnaires were received from1000questionnaires with effective rate of91.5%, of which there were83people diagnosed with IBS. Overall prevalence rate of IBS is9.07%.Male prevalence rate is8.32%, female prevalence rate is9.91%,312from medical students,316frompsychology students and287from literature students. Female prevalence rate is higher than male(9.91%vs.8.32%,χ2=4.312,P=0.037). And there is no differences of prevalence of IBS was foundover medical students, literature students and psychology students; Logistic regression analysisindicated eating cold food frequency≥3times a week、eating dairy frequency≥3times a week、eatinghigh-fiber foods frequency <4times a week、physical activity time <4hours per week、insomniafrequency≥3times a week.Anxiety and depression may be a risk factor of pathogenesis of IBS.Conclusions: No significant differences in the prevalence of IBS were found over different major ofpostgraduates. The prevalence of women was higher than men. Eating cold food and dairy frequency≥3times a week、eating high-fiber foods frequency <4times a week、 physical activity time <4hours per week、 insomnia frequency≥3times a week. Anxiety and depression was related to thepathogenesis of IBS or related to factors above together. The preventive measures should be taken withtargeted interventions.
