Investigation Of The Prevalence And The Risk Factors Of Blindness And Vision Impairment With Moderate And Severe Degree Among Adults Aged 50 Years And Above In Yugan Country

Objective: To investigate the prevalence and the risk factors of blindness and vision impairment with moderate and severe degree,leading cause of these impairments among adults aged 50 years and above in Yugan county of Jiangxi.To improve the residents' awareness of the blindness of blind,as well as the knowledge of eye disease.To provide policy basis and basic data of epidemiology for the work of blindness prevention.Methods: This survey is to adopt the method of stratified cluster random sampling.A random sample of 5119 rural residents,the age is more than equal to 50 years old,from 36 village committees.After the eye examination,we use relevant statistical methods(Including statistical description,chi-square test and Logistic regression analysis,etc.)for data analysis.Results:(1)5119 individuals aged 50 years and above were investigated.According to the standard of BCVA,Of all survey individuals,there were 442 with blindness,vision impairment with moderate and severe degree and the prevalence was 8.63 %.In which,75 persons suffered from blindness and the prevalence was 1.46 %,367 persons suffered from vision impairment with moderate and severe degree and the prevalence was 7.17 %.According to the standard of PVA,Of all survey individuals,there were 983 with blindness,vision impairment with moderate and severe degree and the prevalence was 19.20 %.In which,111 persons suffered from blindness and the prevalence was 2.17 %,872 persons suffered from vision impairment with moderate and severe degree and the prevalence was 17.03 %.(2)The top five leading to blindness and vision impairment with moderate and severe degree were cataract(59.3%),ametropia(14.9%),macular degeneration(6.8%),corneal opacity/scar(2.8%)and posterior capsular opacification(2.6%),respectively.(3)According to the standard of BCVA,The risk factors of blindness and vision impairment with moderate and severe degree show that older people have the higher prevalence of blindness and vision impairment with moderate and severe degree(OR:2.702,95%CI:2.051392~3.052),people`s immediate family members with a history of eye disease have the higher prevalence(OR:1.702,95%CI:1.061~2.732),the often eat vegetables people have the lower prevalence(OR:0.767,95%CI:0.631~0.934),the often eat fruits people have the lower prevalence(OR:0.808,95%CI:0.662~0.986),people with a history of eye disease have the higher prevalence(OR:1.749,95%CI:1.403~2.181).According to the standard of PVA,The risk factors of blindness and vision impairment with moderate and severe degree show that older people have the higher prevalence of blindness and vision impairment with moderate and severe degree(OR:2.522,95%CI : 2.273 ~ 2.799),Male prevalence rate is lower than female(OR:0.823,95%CI:0.699~0.969),People with low cultural have the higher prevalence(OR:0.782,95%CI:0.672~0.910),the farmer have the lower prevalence then not farmer(OR:0.777,95%CI:0.623~0.969),the Married people have the lower prevalence then single person(OR:0.805,95%CI : 0.672 ~ 0.963),people`s immediate family members with a history of eye disease have the higher prevalence(OR:1.549,95%CI:1.071~2.239),the often eat vegetables people have the lower prevalence(OR:0.838,95%CI:0.725~0.969),the often eat fruits people have the lower prevalence(OR:0.752,95%CI:0.651~0.870),the people with adequate sleep have the lower prevalence(OR:0.869,95%CI:0.767~0.985),people with a history of eye disease have the higher prevalence(OR:1.525,95%CI:1.284~1.810).Conclusions: The prevalence of blindness and vision impairment with moderate and severe degree is in a state of national medium level among adults aged 50 years and above in Yugan county of Jiangxi,Blindness and vision impairment with moderate and severe degree are still serious problems in our province.Cataract is the main pathogenic factors leading to blindness and vision impairment with moderate and severe degree,For our province and even the whole country,Cataract surgery is the main method for the treatment of it,At the same time also should pay attention to prevention and treatment of adult refractive errors.According to the study of risk factors of blindness and vision impairment with moderate and severe degree,The government should increase propaganda of the knowledge about Blindness prevention and treatment,Reasonable diet,Health work and rest,Physical exercise,etc.
