Objective To identify some risk factors related to caries in deciduous teeth from preventive medical direction as early as possible and provide scientific evidence for decision-making for prevention. Methods Through investigating the oral healthy condition among children of aged 5 in Fuzhou, and making a further analysis for the social and behavioral factors, we try to identify some risk factors related to caries in deciduous teeth. It could provide scientific evidence for decision-making for prevention against caries in deciduous teeth. We have investigated the oral healthy condition among 1848 children of aged 5 in Fuzhou. And children's mothers completed a questionnaires about the relationship between serious caries in deciduous teeth and general characters, mother's complex diseases during their pregnancies and parturitions, the diseases and drugs taken during infant periods, feeding habits, oral hygiene habits, dental visits, mother's knowledge and attitude about oral hygiene. By the T-test, Chi-square and Logistic Regression analysis, the results were obtained. Results The prevalence rate of caries was 81.01% and dmft was 5.35 in deciduous teeth among children of aged 5 in Fuzhou, which were higher than the average levels in China in 1995. The filling rate was low. The highest prevalence rate of caries was the deciduous incisors in the maxillary. 42.91% of the children had 79.50% caries in deciduous teeth. During the general characters, the elder age of father, the long educational years of parents, the high-income levels were protective factors.Talking about mother's complex diseases during their pregnancies and parturitions, the weightier birth weight, enough pregnant months, natural parturition, the elder parturient age of mother were protective factors.During infant periods, sugar-contained drugs taken frequently, taking drugs between two meals were risk factors. In the feeding habits, suckling mother's breast frequently, having sleep by drinking mother's milk, bottle-feeding too late, using milk bottle too long every time, drinking fruit juice and sweet milk before sleep, eating snacks frequently, not enough supplemented foods ,being taken care of by mother between 12 months to 3-years-old were risk factors. In oral hygiene habits, cleaning teeth early and with parents' helps, brushing teeth everyday were protective factors. The presences of visiting dentists in serious caries children were higher than that in caries free children because of their treatment needs. The non-filling caries in mother's mouth was risk factors.Mothers' knowledge and attitude towards oral hygiene would decide the children's oral healthy condition.Logistic Regression showed: the high-income level, enough pregnant months, natural parturition, the elder parturient age of mother, eating snacks not frequently, visiting dentists frequently were protective factors. Conclusion In summary, the improvement of oral healthy condition is the first priority for oral prevention in Chinese children, and it is necessary that a further study to identify the risk factors related to caries in deciduous teeth in order to explore the effective approaches for caries prevention.
