Objective:To analyze the syndrome distribution of functional constipation and its associated pathogenic factors, provide a basis for TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) Syndrome differentiation of the disease. Methods:Formulate a scientific and unified questionnaire by use the methodologies for epidemiological survey; Train the investigating officers to avoid errors in the survey; By investigate the patients with functional constipation who treated in the Chengdu University of TCM Affiliated Hospital gastroenterology department, collect patients’demographics, four diagnostic methods of TCM, and syndrome (identified by two or more attending physicians); Finish the survey forms and establishes a database; Use statistical methods to summarize the dialectical type and related factors of functional constipation.Result:(1) Heat and dampness of spleen and stomach is the main syndrome of functional constipation TCM syndromes, followed by Heat and dampness of spleen and stomach>excessive heat in the intestine>the stagnation of qi>the lack of qi and deficiency of spleen>the deficiency of spleen and kidney yang>the dryness of intestine due to yin deficiency.(2)Syndrome distribution of functional constipation has correlation to Western medicine typing、course of disease、body mass index(BMI)、diet and emotions, but it has no significant correlation to gender and age.(3)The main clinical manifestations of functional constipation are:dry stools, difficult to defecation, poor stool output. Systemic symptoms are bloating, dry mouth, chills, ache in waist and knees, insomnia, forgetfulness.(4) Young people are more likely to have functional constipation, female prone to male ratio is4.75:1, gender differences in the incidence decreases with age.(5)The incidence of functional constipation related to education, The patients are mainly retired people and low income worker.(6)People with long-term medication and bad dietary habits, people who like to eat spicy food are more likely to have function constipation.(7)Nearly50%of patients have mood disorders and a variety of negative emotions.(8) The disease seems to have familial tendency. Conclusion:The study shows that heat and dampness of spleen and stomach is the main syndrome of functional constipation, excessive heat in the intestine and the stagnation of qi are the syndromes which have higher proportion. Empirical syndromes are the main types of functional constipation. TCM syndromes and Western medicine typing are correlated:slow transit constipation is common to the stagnation of qi, also the lack of qi and deficiency of spleen; bowel obstructive constipation is common to heat and dampness of spleen and stomach, mixed constipation is common to excessive heat in the intestine, also the heat and dampness of spleen and stomach. The incidence of functional constipation mainly youth, female prone to male ratio is4.75:1, gender differences in the incidence decreases with age. The incidence also related to education, dietary habits, body mass index, mood disorders, long-term medication and other factors.
