Functional constipation(FC), also named idiopathic constipation , is the most common chronic constipation. The prevalence of FC varies from 4 to 17 percent in ordinary people with the general tendency that it is more common in the West than in the East, in female than in male and in the old than in the young according to the domestic and international related reports. What deserves to be noticed is that the morbidity of children has been rising up too. The studies on FC have attracted much attention with the growing number of its patients day by day because it has become increasingly harmful to human beings. So far, the pathogen and the mechanism of FC are not all clear yet. Bad life habits (less dietary fiber intake, defecating not on time, stool retention) and spiritual psychological factors (tense or depression) may definitely contribute to the increased prevalence of FC and hereditary factor may also account for the process of constipation. But the role of other factors has no consensus yet. Presently , there are some theories about the mechanism of FC: abnormality of gut nerves and neurotransmitter , disorder of the hormone secreting , abnormity of interstitial cell of Cajal, aberration of the aquaporin expression and pelvic bottom function obstacle and so on, of which ,studies on aberration of the aquaporins expression and abnormity of interstitial cell of Cajal are considered most promising. Anorectal manometry and electromyogram of pelvic bottom have become the major measures to evaluate the function of pelvic bottom today.Aquaporins ( AQPs) is a group of transmembrane proteins allocating onto the membrane of different type of cells and mediating transmembrane transport of liquid. There are all together 11 kinds of AQP subtype discovered since Agre discovered...
