Objective:To evaluate the efficacy of statins in combination with interferon therapy in patients with relasing-remmitting multiple sclerosis. Methods:Information from the year 1980 and up to December 2014 was retrieved from Cochrane library, Medline, EMbase, PubMed, Web of Science, China Biology Medical Disc (CBM), China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI),VIP and other database. Collected publications were all about randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of statins in combination with interferon therapy in patients with multiple sclerosis and interferon alone. We screened relevant studies according to the predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria, the quality of these trials was assessed by Jadad score, then we collected the data we needed to performed Meta-analysis by using RevMan 5.3 software.Result:A total of 5 randomized controlled trials including 485 patients were enrolled. The results of Meta-analysis showed that:the combination group versus the monotherapy group:new contrast-enhanced lesions (MD=-0.25, 95%CI [-0.64,0.14], P=0.21), Change in lesion volume (cm3) on T2-weighted images(MD=-0.25,95%CI [-0.30,0.13], P=0.43), new lesions on T2-weighted images (MD=1.12,95%CI [-2.81,5.04], P=0.58), Change of EDSS (MD=-0.33,95%CI[-0.92,0.27], P=0.28), the risk of relapse (risk ratio =1.20,95%CI[0.86,1.67], P=0.28) and the risk of disease progression (risk ratio=1.18,95%CI[0.75,1.86], P=0.46) had no statistical differences. Conclusion:The addition of statins to interferon therapy did not significantly influence the new contrast-enhanced lesions, Change in lesion volume on T2-weighted images, new lesions on T2-weighted images, Change of EDSS, the risk of relapse and the risk of disease progression in patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis, compared to interferon monotherapy. Further studies with larger sample sizes and longer durations of follow-up are needed to provide additional data as to the true effects of statins in the treatment of multiple sclerosis.
