Objective: Shegan Mahuang decoction arises from the golden chamber, as aclassic decoction, have being tested clinically for a long time. Generations ofphysicians had done quite a lot for its research from different viewpoints. Toreorganize the mechanisms of Shegan Mahuang decoction’s effect and the changedsyndrome, according to the Basic Theories of Chinese Medicine, is to fuse theprinciple, the method, the decoction, and the medicine together, which can beregarded as an effective way to improve the level of diagnosis and treatment. Methods: The methods of literature analysis are applied to collect informationand make analysis, in accord with a standard condition with457references, including213basis, clinical observation of337references, select large sample, designreasonable experiment class with152references. We summed up the shegan mahuangdecoction’s spectrum of diseases and arranged them in descending order, by doing thestatistic of all the diseases showed on those clinical observations and case reports.wesorted out the concrete mechanism of Shegan Mahuang decoction’s effect,by doingthe analysis of experiment studies.we summed up the most likely syndromes besidethe typical syndrome of cold-phlegm obstructing the lung,by doing the statistics ofthe changed syndromes and added drugs showed on those works、treaties、medicalinstances、clinical observations and case reports.we analyzed the mechanisms ofchanged syndromes’s appearance、shegan mahuang decoction and added drugs’seffect, according to the Basic Theories of Chinese Medicine, and to make a profoundsense of the mechanisms by comparing the Shegan mahuang decoction with itssimilar decoctions.Result:By reviewing the literatures on shegan mahuang decoction, the studies ofphysicians over the ages mainly focused on the etiology and pathogenesis ofsyndrome, efficacy, indications and the drugs added or subtracted, the pathogenesis ofthe syndrom is Phlegm stagnation、lung Qi upward reversal largely, and efficacy isventilating lung qi for dissipating phlegm and relieving cough.Clinical symptoms are cough、asthma and laryngeal stridor.Clinical syndromes are cold rheum collecting inthe lung, waterlogging due to pulmonary depression,phlegm-heat obstructing in thelung, exterior cold and lung heat, lung heat and constipation, yang deficiency of lung、spleen and kidney, yin deficiency of lung、heart and kidney, retention of phlegm andblood stasis in the lung, etc. The drugs added or substracted are on the basis of primarydecoction totally. The modern researchs show that Shegan mahuang decoction can beused in the bronchial asthma, bronchitis, lung infection, COPD, and many other lungdiseases. It primarily by (1) promotion on apoptosis of eosinophils (EOS)(2) thearginase I role in gene regulation (arg-1)(3) the inhibitory effect of mast cells (MC)(4) Regulation of the immune system (5) act on airway epithelium and the regulationof the viscera’s function and yin-yang,thus play a role of treatment of thesediseases. Conclusion: shegan mahuang decoction has the effectiveness of ventilating lung qifor dissipating phlegm and relieving cough, can treat the cold phlegm obstruction ofthe lung of " abnormal rising of qi, mouth-watering sound in the throat". Cough anddyspnea due to adverseness of QI, along with laryngeal stridor are clinicalcharacteristics of this syndrome.Depending on the different Accompanied Symptoms, the drugs can be added and subtracted. Currently Shegan mahuang decoction can beused in the bronchial asthma, bronchitis, lung infection, Upper respiratoryinfections, lung cancer and many other lung diseases. its treatment mechanism mainlyhas anti-inflammatory, inhibit the secretion of epithelial cells, immune regulation, andso on.
