ObjectiveTo explore and understand reasons for obstetric medical staff themselves choosing cesarean section in the absence of medical indication. To explore and understand their views on other pregnant women’s choosing caesarean section in the absence of medical indication.MethodsA qualitative study was conducted on11Obstetric medical workers using in-depth interviews. Verbatim transcripts of the interviews were analyzed using category analysis.Results Four themes were extracted related to reasons for obstetric medical staff themselves choosing cesarean section in the absence of medical indication:being afraid of labour, the relative trust of cesarean section, the autonomy of choosing delivery modes, and rejoicing and regretting. And two themes about their views on other pregnant women’s choosing caesarean section in the absence of medical indication:recommending natural delivery; respecting and accepting women’s self-choice.Conclusion The lived experience of choosing caesarean section in the absence of medical indication in this population has its particularity, which was affected by their medical status and the environment they lived in. And they should lean self-motivation and mutual encouragement to increase confidence in vaginal delivery. Medical staff respects maternity personal choices, hoping they can provide objective, accurate, comprehensive and consistent information individually.
