The Effectiveness Of A Fixation Technique For Patella Fractures Using QWIX Screws

Objective To evaluate the effectiveness of a fixation technique forpatella fractures using QWIX with or without Kirschner wire and Wire.Methods From September2011to September2012,Thirty patients withpatalla fractures were treated via surgery using QWIX screws with orwithout Kirschner wire and Wire,including17males and13females,agedfrom24years to81years (47.7years on average).The treatment of thepatella fractures depends on the type of the fracture andhe size of thefracture fragments.Both active and passive knee motion exercises began1day after surgery,without immobilisation in a semicircular plaster cast.Thepatients were followed up range from12months to24months (6weeks,3months,6months,12months,24months)to evaluate fracture union,activerange of flexion and extension of knee,complications.the function of kneeusing the Bostman score at one year postoperatively.Results All of the patients were follwed up for a mean period of18.5months.The fractures union as seen radiographically occurred3months inmajority of the patients,minority occurred4months,at a mean time of3.2months.As the time goes by,the function of the knee getting better and better,all of the patients returned to their previous activity level at one yearpostoperatively. One patient complained of pain due to dislocation of theKirschner wire, no postoperative complications such asinfection,pain,dislocation or breakage of the implants,obstacles of theactivity of the knee, were found in the remaining patients. Knee functionwas evaluated using the clinical grading scale described by Bostman,excellent in27cases, good in3cases and unsatisfactory in no case.Conclusion The fixation technique using QWIX screws with or withoutKirschner wire and Wire result in satisfactory outcomes for patellafractures without any obvious complications and should be considered asan effective method for treatment of patella fractures.
