Objectives:To divide the upper and lower boundary on the outside wall of thefemoral trochanter. To measure the distance from upper bound of lateral trochanteric wallto the peak of greater trochanter, and lower bound to the basal part of the lesser trochanterin different groups of subjects, and to compare the differences.Method:1. Data measurement1.1Collect image data:101hip CT scan images were collected which werecomply with this experiment in the Second Affiliated hospital of University of SouthChina in the near four years.1.2Measurement Methods: chose the widest diameter of each CT image of thecortical bone to make a square, intended for the region of interest (ROI), measured thevalue of the CT.1.3Data analysis: made the graphs. According to Wolff’s law, assumed the regionbetween the minimum and maximum CT value as the outside wall of the femoraltrochanter.2.Biopsy examination2.112specimens were scanned by CT, marked the corresponding minimum andmaximum CT value levels on each physical specimen according to the measurementresults. To define the minimum and maximum CT value levels as the center, extendedto upward and downward of3mm,and divided this area into three equal portions. Tookthe bone tissuefor slices (six bone tissued from each specimen).2.2Took the different levels of bone tissues for slices, selected the region ofinterest (ROI) from corresponding parts, measured the number and diameter of osteon.Thedata were statistically analyzed.2.3Analyzed the data from tissue sections and CT values of the outside wall ofthe femoral trochanter. To explore whether these data were relevant and if they were matched the Wolff’s law.3.Packet MeasurementAccording to the method mentioned above,101hip CT scan images were dividedinto male and female groups; left and right limbs groups and different age groups tomeasure the distance from upper bound of lateral trochanteric wall to the peak of greatertrochanter, and lower bound to the basal part of the lesser trochanter. Then compared thestatistical analysis resluts.4.Statistical MethodsMeasured the data of CT the lateral wall of the femoral trochanter values andanalyzed by SPSS17.0statistical software; CT values of trochanteric bone outside wallwere used Statistical description for analyzing. CT values of corresponding level onIntertrochanteric outside wall and the number, diameter of osteon were adopted withbivariate correlation analysis; the number of different levels of bone biopsy units, boneunit diameter were used independent samples T-test for statistical analysis; thecomparison of the distance in different populations’ Intertrochanteric outside wall togreater trochanter and the distance from the base of the lesser trochanter and lowerbounds contrast were used independent samples T-test for statistical analysis. Results:The CT values of the outside wall of the femoral trochanter for101hip CT scanimages showed from high to low to high. The minimum values were between215-251HUand the maximum values were between1190-1340HU.The minimum CT value of the outside wall of the femoral trochanter shows nosignificant correlation with the number of osteon of corresponding level, but correlatedwith the diameter of Osteon,r=0.61, P<0.05. The maximum CT value shows nosignificant correlation with the number of osteon of corresponding level, correlated withthe diameter of osteon, r=0.57, P<0.05.The distance between upper bounds of the lateral femoral trochanter wall and thepeak of greater trochanter was within the range of1.49-1.90cm in male groups, andwithin the range of1.18-1.78cm in female groups; within the range of1.18-1.90cm inleft limbs groups, and within the range of1.18-1.90cm in right limbs groups; within the range of1.37-1.90cm in<50age groups, and within the range of1.18-1.84cm in≥50age groups. The distance between lower bounds of the lateral femoral trochanter wall and thebasal part of the lesser trochanter was within the range of0.57-1.46cm in malegroups, and within the range of0.51-1.31cm in female groups; within the range of0.51-1.46cm in left limbs groups, and within the range of0.52-1.45cm in right limbs groups;within the range of0.52-1.46cm in<50age groups, and within the range of0.51-1.26cm in≥50age groups.ConclusionThe distance from upper bounds of the lateral femoral trochanter wall to the peakof greater trochanter was within the range of1.18-1.90cm.From the lower bounds of thelateral femoral trochanter wall to the basal part of the lesser trochanter, it was within0.51-1.46cm.The minimum CT value and maximum CT value can be a kind of divisionmethod to divide the upper and lower boundary of the outside wall of the femoraltrochanter. The method to measure the distance between upper and lower boundaryrespectively with big rotor vertex and small rotor base of the lateral femoral trochanterwall in different sexes, different limbs and different ages had no significant difference.
