Objective To investigate the prevalence of the knee OA (osteoarthritis, OA)..associated risk factors and epidemiological characteristics in the middle-aged and elderly residents over40years in district of Xiangbei in Hunan,so as to provide the evidences for prevention and treatment. Methods The district of xiangbei were devided into urban level and rural level,and215village committees and177residential committees were drawn randomly from each level by the stratified cluster sampling survey. All the residents over40years were required to finish the questionnaire about the knee OA by door-to-door interview. The diagnoses of knee OA is based on the Guidelines of Diagnosis and Treatment of Osteoarthritis issued by Chinese Orthopaedic Association in2007.The subjects who have the symptoms of knee OA were assessed by X-rays.Once confirmed, we evaluated the severity of knee OA. Severity of symptoms was measured using the ISOA, and the radiographic severity using Kellgren-Lawrence grades. The statistics and analysis of the date was finished with SPSS19.0and Excel2007, the P<0.05means a significant difference. Results The prevalence of knee OA of middle-aged and elderly residents was19.9%in the district of xiangbei, the difference of the prevalence of knee OA between urban areas(19.8%) and rural areas(20.0%)was not significant(P>0.05),the prevalence of female and male were26.7%and13.4%respectively, with a significant difference(P<0.01).The severity degree of knee OA is higher in rural areas than the urban’s with the significant difference (P<0.05). The symptom severity degree of knee OA is higher in the female than the male. Both of the symptom and radiographic severity degree of knee OA are higher among older age subjects.Rural subjects have a higher radiographic severity degree of knee OA.And subjects with bigger BMI are more likely to have a sever symtom of knee OA.The age, gender,BMI and education level maybe the relative factors for knee OA by logistic regress analyzing.Conclusion1.The prevalence of the knee OA of the middle-aged and elderly residents is19.9%in the district of Xiangbei in Hunan;2.The relative factors for knee OA include age, gender,BMI and education level.3.The severity degree of knee OA is related with gender, age and BMI in clinical smyptom, while radiographic severity degree with age and living area.
