This article dealed with the study on Emilia sonchifolia which are compositae, including chemical composition research, quantitative analysis and antioxidant acitivity of chemical composition. The objective of this article is to isolate and identify chemical composition from Emilia sonchifolia used to traditional Chinese medicine, and this will lay the foundation for the further development of Emilia sonchifolia for medicine.Various column chromatographic techniques were used for the isolation and purification. Five compounds were separated from the parts of ethyl acetate extract of Emilia sonchifolia. Their physical-chemical properties and spectral data determined to elucidate the structures. Their structures were protocatechuic acid, p-hydroxybenzoic acid, p-hydoxyphenylactic acid, syringic acid, p-coumaric acid. All this compounds were isolated from this medicinal materials for the first time except p-hydroxybenzoic acid.Establish a reversed-phase high liquid chromatographic (RP-HPLC) method for simultaneous determination of five phenolic acid compound, including protocatechuic acid, p-hydroxybenzoic acid, p-hydoxyphenylactic acid, syringic acid, p-coumaric acid. The method consult the research of the HPLC fingerprint of Emilia sonchifolia. The content of five phenolic acid compound were measured by RP-HPLC at the wavelength of273nm and gradient eluted program were used and the mobile phase system was methanol and0.4%acetic acid solution. The content of protocatechuic acid, p-hydroxybenzoic acid, p-hydoxyphenylactic acid, syringic acid, p-coumaric acid were48.70|ig/g,21.44μg/g,105.27μg/g,15.98μg/g,20.60μg/g respectively. The RP-HPLC method for determination the content of phenolic acid compound had high sensitivity and good reproducibility.Study on the antioxidant effects of five compounds which were separated from the parts of ethyl acetate extract of Emilia sonchifolia. The determination of antioxidant includes DPPH radical scavenging capacity,·OH scavenging ability, reduceing power. The results suggest that protocatechuic acid and syringic acid were one of the source of antioxidants of Emilia sonchifolia.
