Object: By collecting the clinical information of ankylosing spondylitis with themethods of clinical epidemiology and analyzing the characteristics of TCMsyndromes of the disease from the viewpoint of the theory of “deficiency, pathogenicfactors and stasis” to preliminarily establish the TCM syndrome classification anddifferentiation standards for ankylosing spondylitis and provide the basis for studyingit and treating it clinically with Chinese medicine. Methods: By retrieving literature, reading relative books, consulting experts andpre-surveying, a clinical information questionnaire was designed for ankylosingspondylitis. A clinical epidemiological investigation was made of the206outpatientsand inpatients of ankylosing spondylitis treated first in Henan Rheumatism Hospitalfrom2013April to2013December. Finally-collected data were input into thedatabase for the data processing with SPSS19.0statistical software. With statisticalmethods such as descriptive analysis, frequency analysis, factor analysis and clusteranalysis, TCM syndrome characteristics of ankylosing spondylitis were analyzed fromthe viewpoint of the theory of “deficiency, pathogenic factors and stasis” to establishthe TCM syndrome classification and differentiation standards for the disease.Results:1. There were206cases with ankylosing spondylitis in the study, including174males and32females, the male to female ratio being about5.4:1. The age ofonset mainly ranged from10to30, and the course of disease was as long as2to20years. The causes of the disease were mainly tiredness, being attacked by wind, coldand dampness, and trauma. The first onset was mainly in summer and winter.2. Aftersimplifying data, reducing variables and doing factor analysis,8common factors inline with the TCM syndrome diagnosis were got, which basically reflected the causeand pathogenesis of ankylosing spondylitis. The variable was clustered into3groupsby cluster analysis. Combined with the8common factors and the theory of “deficiency, pathogenic factors and stasis”, the TCM syndromes of ankylosingspondylitis were divided into3categories:⑴Syndrome due to kidney yin deficiencygenerating intrinsic heat, and dampness-stasis blockage;⑵Syndrome due topathogenic factor-stasis blockage, kidney deficiency and liver qi depression;⑶Syndrome due to cold accumulation caused by kidney yang deficiency, andobstruction of collaterals by blood stasis. Conclusion: Under the guidance of the theory of “deficiency, pathogenic factors andstasis” and with the statistical methods such as factor analysis and cluster analysis, theTCM syndromes of ankylosing spondylitis were divided into3categories:⑴Syndrome due to kidney yin deficiency generating intrinsic heat, anddampness-stasis blockage;⑵Syndrome due to pathogenic factor-stasis blockage, kidney deficiency and liver qi depression;⑶Syndrome due to cold accumulationcaused by kidney yang deficiency, and obstruction of collaterals by blood stasis.
