ObjectiveA randomized control trial was conducted in this research. Based on the comparison of FBG, P2hBG, TC, TG, obesity, life quality and dosage change of antidiabetic drugs before and after the intervention of abdomen acupuncture, we hope to evaluate the effectiveness of this treatment, as well as to discover an effective way to improve the health of T2DM patients with overweight or obesity, and hopefully to provide a solid ground for future study.MethodsThe study population consisted of60T2DM patients with overweight or obesity, who were chosen based on the enrollment criteria. By applying simple randomization,60patients were separated into two groups:testing group (30people, abdomen acupuncture+regular antidiabetic drugs) and control group (30people, regular antidiabetic drugs only).FBG, P2hBG, Hb1Ac, TC, TG, BMI, waistline, TCM syndrome and life quality were evaluated and collected before and after the study.Results1. The total efficiencies of the testing and control group were80.0%and73.3%, there is no statistical difference between them (P>0.05)2. After the intervention, both groups demonstrated significant change for the following:FBG, P2hBG, Hb1Ac, BMI and waistline (P<0.01), however, TG and TC demonstrated no significant difference (P>0.05). After the intervention, none of the indicators demonstrated any statistical difference (P>0.05).3. Among the testing group,50.0%reduced the dosage of antidiabetic drugs, which is significantly different than the rate of the control group, which is13.3%(P<0.005). 4. Both groups demonstrated better Chinese medicine syndromes (P<0.001). Also, the result from the testing group is significantly different than that of the control group (P<0.001)5. Both groups demonstrated better life qualities (P<0.001). Also, the result from the testing group is statistically different than that of the control group (P<0.05)ConclusionAbdomen acupuncture is effective in treating T2DM patients with overweight or obesity. Coupled with antidiabetic drugs, diet control and regular exercise, abdomen acupuncture is able to improve BMI, waistline, FBG, P2hBG, Hb1Ac levels, reduce the dosage of antidiabetic drugs, alleviate T2DM syndromes, and promote life qualities.
