Objective To investigate the incidence of phlebitis associated with Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter with two interventions in patients with cancer. To explore the effec-tiveness of two different measures which reduce the occurrence of phlebitis with PICC, so as to provide scientific basis for preventing PICC-associated phlebitis.Method With convenience sampling method,396tumor patients with PICC who met the study criteria were recruited in December2011~July2013in the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences Cancer Hospital. They were divided into two groups according the wards, respectively, to wet-hot compress group or Hirudoid Cream group. From before the catheterization to within1week after PICC catheterization, researcher recorded the patient’s general information and catheter catheterization information, analyzed the time of phlebitis occurred, incidence, and classification of phlebitis. The incidence and severity of two group patients’phlebitis were compared. Results The incidence of phlebitis was6.63%in the Hirudoid Cream group, and7.50%in the wet-hot compress group. The chi-square test found that there was no statistical dif-ference between two groups (χ2=0.11, P>0.05). The rank sum test found, the severity of phlebitis in the Hirudoid Cream group was lower than the wet-hot compress group, but no statistical difference was found (Z=-0.32, P=0.75). Wet-hot compress group patients phlebitis spent an average of3.0711.49days and Hirudoid Cream phlebitis occurred in2.46±0.88days on average, two groups of patients with phlebitis occurred was no sta-tistical differences (Z=-0.58,P=0.56). There was no significant difference found between two groups about complications occurred (χ2=0.16, P>0.05).Conclusion Hirudoid Cream and wet-hot compress can prevent phlebitis after PICC ca-theterization in patients with cancer and the effect is no different. It may point out that we may choose Hirudoid Cream method to prevent the phlebitis with PICC.
