Objective:This study was designed to investigate the relationship between catestatin(CST)and essential hypertension, and to explore the relationship between catestatin andtarget organ damage in patients with hypertension.Methods:146patients with essential hypertension as we collected were taken ashypertensive group which were divided into two groups:one with NLVH (non leftventricular hypertrophy)[male33,female52,average age(66.9±11.9)]which included85patients and another with LVH(left ventricular hypertrophy)[male36,female25,average age(64.2±14.1)]which included61patients. Also40healthy individualswere selected as control group,[male20,female20,average age(62.7±8.4)]. Allpatients were required to measure blood pressure, height, weight, blood lipid, bloodglucose, glycosylated hemoglobin, electrolytes, liver function, renal function, urinaryalbumin, homocysteine (Hcy), Cystatin C (CysC), GFR (glomerular filtration rate),BNP, TNI, also the plasma level of CST and norepinephrine(NE) level were measured. All subjects underwent ultrasound heartbeat graph examination, and measured leftventricular diastolic diameter(LVDD), interventricular septal thickness(IVST)andleft ventricular posterior wall thickness(LVPWT),then calculated left ventricularmass index(LVMI),and used carotid ultrasonography to messure carotid arteryintima-media thickness (IMT). The differences of related indicators between threegroups were compared, and correlation of CST and LVMI, NE, BNP, Hcy, CysC,IMT, SBP (systolic pressure), MAP (mean arterial pressure) was analyzed by SPSS18.0, then the independent relationship between CST and related indicators wasanalyzed by parallel multiple linear stepwise regression analysis.Results1. The levels of plasma CST, NE, BNP, Hcy,Cr-, CysC and GFR, LVMI, IMT,significantly increased in primary hypertension group, compared with healthy controlsgroup (P <0.05). The levels of plasma CST, NE, LVMI, BNP, CysC in hypertensiveLVH group were significantly higher than that of NLVH group (P <0.05).2. The plasma level of CST and LVMI, NE, BNP, CysC, SBP, MAP, IMT werepositively correlated (P <0.05), and Hcy unrelated (P>0.05).3. The multiple linear stepwise regression analysis showed that CST and BNP wereindepent related indicators with left LVMI; CST and Hcy were indepent relatedindicators with IMT; LVMI and Hcy were indepent related indicators with CysC,while CST had no independent relationship with CysC. Conclusion1.Catestatin (CST) in patients with essential hypertension anomaly increased isassociated with abnormal blood pressure, and may be the indicator of the severity ofhigh blood pressure.2.There is positive correlation between catestatin and LVMI, BNP, CysC,IMT inpatients with essential hypertension, the higher the level of CST, reflect the targetorgan damage in patients with more serious..3. Catestatin may be independent predictor of the left ventricular hypertrophy andarteriosclerosis, which is an important index of target organ damage in pations withessential hypertension.
