Objective To investigate the relationship between structure and function of carotid artery and left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) in hypertensive patients by high resolution ultrasonography. Methods Carotid ultrasonography and echocardiography were performed in 81hypertensive patients by HP SONOS 4500 multi-function color Doppler ultrasonography. According to left ventricular mass index (LVMI), hypertensive patients were divided into hypertension with LVH group (n=22) and hypertension without LVH group (n=59). By carotid ultrasonography, the site , number and echo of plaques were observed and recorded; Intima-media thickness(IMT), systolic diameter(Ds) and diastolic diameter(Dd) in carotid artery were respectively measured. Carotid artery stiffness β index and distensibility (CD) were respectively calculated. All measurements in hypertensive patients were compared with those in the control group (n=30).Results (1) IMT, β index, Ds and Dd were higher in hypertension group than those in the control group, and those in hypertension with LVH group were the highest (P<0. 001). The CD in hypertension group were lower than in the control group, and those in hypertension with LVH group were the lowest (P<0. 001). (2) Age was positively correlated with IMT, Ds, Dd and β index, and age was...
