Objective To describe the status of hope level in patients with gastric cancer, toanalyse the influencing factors of hope level, the relationship among hope level, personality, anxiety and depression, to promote patient physical and mental development and their qualityof life.Methods120Gastric cancer patients were examed by Herth Hope Scale(HHI),The BigFive Personality Inventory (NEO-FFI),Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAMA) and HamiltonDepression Scale (HAMD) from October2010to December2011.Useing t-test, analysis ofvariance (ANOVA),LSD-t test, correlation analysis and multiple stepwise regression analysisto analyze the data.Results1. The level of hope in patients with gastric cancer was from moderate to high.2. there were statistical differences in hope level in patients with gastric cancer on gender, marriage, education degree, income and medical expenses payment (P<0.05).3. Scores ofextraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness of personality traits in gastric cancer patientswith moderate hope level were significantly lower than those with high hope level. Scores ofanxiety and depression was significantly higher than those with high hope level (P <0.05).4.there were significantly positive correlation among the extraversion, agreeableness ofpersonality traits and overall level of hope and it’s dimension. In addition to patients’ attitudeto positive action, level of hope and scores of anxiety and its two-dimension weresignificantly negatively correlated.(P<0.05). Level of hope had a significant negativecorrelation with score of depression and it′s dimension(anxiety/somatization,sleep) inpatients with gastric cancer (P<0.05).5. The Stepwise regression analyze found that conscientiousness and neuroticism of the personality, anxiety and depression were the therelevant factors that affected the hope level in patients with gastric cancer and they explain thetotal variance of39.3%. Extraversion and somatic anxiety can predict the present and futureattitude of the hope level, and they explained15.8%of the total variance. Anxiety andneuroticism can predict the taking positive action of hope level, and they explained17.7%ofthe total variance. Depression can predict the maintaining a close relationship with other ofthe hope level, and it explained21.9%of the total variance.Conclusion1. Level of hope in patients with gastric cancer is from moderate to high.2. The level of hope in patients with gastric cancer was significantly positivelycorrelated with Scores of extraversion, openness, agreeableness, conscientiousness. it wassignificantly negatively correlated with neuroticism.3.The relevant factors that affected the level of hope in gastric cancer patients arepersonality traits, anxiety and depression.
