Objective:To explore the depression, anxiety, personality traits and the associated factors in epileptic adult patients.Methold:97 adult patients diagnosed with epilepsy were investigated andassess ed at the out-patients epilepsy clinic of First Affiliated Hospital of Dalian Medical University from March,2009 to November,2009.63 healthy volunteers matched in sex, age and education leves were used as controls, which came from heathy medical staff and their family members, community members. All adult patients with epilepsy were assessed with self-made questionnaire including causing, duration, frequency, antiepileptic drug, type of epileptic seizures and so on. Hamiltion Dpression Rating Scale for Dpression(HAMD)and Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale for Anxiety(HAMA).Eysenck Personality Questionnaire(EPQ), Life Event Scale(LES). Two group on factors of HAMD,HAMA, EPQ, and the independent variable analyses for continuous data.Results:1.The scores of HAMD,HAMA in the case group and control group were significant differences(P<0.01).The scores of anxiety/somatization, weight, cognitive impairment, retardation, sleep disturbance, general somatic symptoms in HAMD of case group were significantly increased. The scores of somatization anxiety, mental anxiety in HAMA of case group were significantly increased.2. The incidence of the depressive disorders was 44.8%, the incidence of the mild, modetate, serious depression were 86%,12%,2%in case group. The incidence of the anxious disorders were 52.1%, the incidence of the mild, modetate, serious anxiety were 60%,28%,12%in case group. The incidence of the depressive disorders and anxious disorders were 2%,3%,were all mild depression/anxiety. Epilepsy group HAMD scores of anxiety/somatization, weight, cognitive impairment, retardation, sleep disturbance, systemic symptoms six factor scores were significantly increased.HAMA score of somatization and anxiety were both significantly increased.3.Pearson's correlation test and multiple linear stepwise regression analyses indicated HAMD,HAMA in case group had correlation with age, frequency, the frequence of family nagative life events(P<0.01).In HAMD score as the depedentent variable, age, frequency, the frequence of family nagative life events were into the regression equation. In HAMA score as the depedentent variable, frequency, the frequence of family nagative life events were into the regression equation.4.The scores of neurotisim(N)in EPQ were higher than in control group(P<0.01).5.The frequence of family, work, social negative life events were higher than in control group(P<0.01).Conclusion:1.adult patients with epilepsy were high incidence of depression and anxiety. HAMD scores of anxiety/somatization, weight, cognitive impairment, retardation, sleep disturbance, systemic symptoms six factor scores were significantly increased. (P<0.05)HAMA score of somatization and anxiety were both significantly increased. (P<0.05)2. Age, seizure frequency and family negative events are depression and anxiety in adults with epilepsy produce the three major risk factors for mood. The older, more frequent seizures, the family experienced more prone to depression and anxiety.3.The character of adult patients with epilepsy was nervous.
