An Empirical Study On The Transformation Of Manufacturing Structure And Manufacturing Growth In Shanghai

Shanghai is one of the most important manufacturing bases in China. Shanghai manufacturing industry has a rich history, and the Shanghai manufacturing industry plays an important role in promoting the construction and development of China’s manufacturing industry system. Since the1990s, Shanghai has changed the industry development strategy, emphasizing the focus for the development of tertiary industry, while manufacturing industry gradually be forgotten. But in the21st century, Shanghai manufacturing renewed the emphasis. Manufacturing Industry of Shanghai again become a focus of attention. The history of the development of the manufacturing sector is also the history of structural adjustment of manufacturing sector, Shanghai manufacturing development has been accompanied by the restructuring and transformation of the manufacturing industry.The financial crisis has brought a great trouble to the world economy, and for the first time Shanghai economic growth fell below the double-digit rate. In the post-financial crisis era, Shanghai is facing challenges like shrinking external demand, rising labor and land costs, excess capacity in some industries and energy savings more demanding. The Shanghai municipal government come up with the policy "innovation-driven and restructuring for development" to successfully crack these adverse factors. Manufacturing Industry of Shanghai is in crucial period, the Shanghai manufacturing restructuring is related to achieving high-end goal of the manufacturing industry, but also related to the policy"innovation-driven and restructuring for development".The research in the relations of the change of industrial structure and economic growth in Shanghai has rich theoretical value and practical value, it contribute to a clearer understanding of the direction of the structural adjustment in the manufacturing sector, so we can recognize the main drivers of growth in manufacturing industry.This paper focus on studying the Shanghai manufacturing sector restructuring, firstly I summarized the relevant theory and literature at home and abroad, and then the structure of the output and the structure of inputs(such as capital and labor) show manufacturing structural adjustment and transition in the "10th Five-Year Plan" period and the "11th Five-Year Plan" period. And I also have a comparative analysis of the similarities and differences between the two periods of Shanghai manufacturing changes.Both Shift Share method and DEA are used to study the relationship between the restructuring of manufacturing industry and manufacturing growth in Shanghai, the empirical results show that the restructuring of manufacturing industry plays a important role in promoting the manufacturing growth in Shanghai. Finally, I give some valuable policies and recommendations for the transformation and development of the manufacturing industry in Shanghai based on the previous study.
