A Research Of Xiamen City Space Based On The Historical Information Integration(1902-1937)

As one of the five trading ports, in the modern times Xiamen achieve big changes of the social, economic, cultural and the urban space. The city area crowed in the southwest of the island, in the early 20 th century, the development of business, the increase of population,the lack of urban construction land, housing and the traffic inconvenience make the Xiamen space in urgent need of reform. In the 1930 s, with the support of the remittances and local finance,Xiamen basically completed the construction of the roads, parks,Qilou, the new district, the market,and so on, initially formed to today’s urban landscape. Illustrate the urban space of this period, and discusses the urban space evolution of Xiamen in the beginning of the 20 th century,help to make the study of Xiamen further.Based on the historical maps and other historical materials, the study select the construction city area of Xiamen island in 1902-1937 as the research object, take the literature research, the translation of the city space based on the historical data and the overlay analysis of historical maps to explore the changes of the Xiamen city’s space during this period. Specific operation way is to in-depth interpretating the map of 1908 and 1938 and translating them into the Arc GIS software platform, then inform a series of digital maps recorded single historical information, and adding the materials about urban-spatial information in this period into the maps. In the end, superposited the different time or different type maps to contrast and analyse the changes during the city commercial pattern, the traffic network, the urban public space, and the city residential areas of the early 20 th century.Past of Xiamen urban studies pay more attention to the historical stages and characteristics of urban construction, in this study the economy, society, population, education and other aspects of the history materials will combined with the, eventually make the evolution behind the urban spatial morphology fully showing.
