The toroidal drive has advantages such as large transmission ratio, compact size, low noise and high efficiency. However, the tool has to be in the workpiece when processing the inner surface of stator. So it is difficult to realize the possibility of a small size structure. In order to solve the problem, we propose a new composite drive——the small toroidal drive with half stator. This paper focuses on its structure design, dynamic analysis, precision analysis and prototype experiment. The main contents of the paper are as below:The meshing equations of the small toroidal drive with half stator are developed. In the Pro/Engineer system, the 3D modeling and virtual assembly of the drive have been completed. The result shows that the drive theory is correct. In the VC++ language system, the secondary visualization development of UG 9.0 is carried out. A backstage, fast, simplified parametric designing for the drive system is worked out.Driving mechanism of the drive is analyzed. The spatial force model of the drive is presented. Forces and contact stresses between planet and worm or stator are analyzed. The contact stress by finite-element analysis are compared with calculated values. The ability in transmitting torque of symmetric stator and asymmetric stator are contrasted. The ratio of ultimate torque is given. Using ANSYS Workbench soft, the dynamics analysis, stress nephograms, natural frequencies and mode shapes of the drive are finished. The results show that the vibration of the transmission mechanism including mainly the rotational vibration of the worm, rocking vibration of the planet carrier and wraping vibration of the planets. The deformation of planet carrier is the largest.The error analysis and compound is done with the method of probability theory and the principle of physical independence. The total output accuracy of the mechanism is figured out. The impacts of each error is also carried out. In the Visual Basic 6.0 system, a high-precision and fully functioning precision analysis software for small toroidal drive system is developed.The structure design, magnetic force and torque anslysis for toroidal drive with permanent magnet teeth are done. By using Ansoft Maxwell software, the magnetic simulation is. The results of finite-element analysis and calculated value are compared. It shows that the simulated torque is about a quarter of the theoretical calculation value.The model machines of the small toroidal drive with half stator and the toroidal drive with permanent magnet teeth are produced. The tests of the drive are done. The prototype works well. The results validate the feasibility and correctness of theory analysis.
