The Impact Of Large-scale Project Development On Community Evolution: An Empirical Research

Large-scare projects impose direct impacts on local communities during the construction and operation phase. With the lack of concern on community in the social impact assessment, negative impacts and mass events take place from time to time in contemporary China. So, the project’s social impact assessment have not work fully in the community evolution and development. Therefore, it is urgent to investigate the impact of large-scare project on community evolution.Main purpose of this paper is to:1) clarify the impact of large-scale project on the community elements; 2) analysis large-scare project’s impact on the community evolution; 3) verify the applicability of foreign community impact assessment’variable in the domestic, and propose an impact variable system of large-scale project to community. Basic on structure functionalism theory, this paper defines the five elements of community evolution which include: population, organization, group and community relationship, infrastructure and social culture.This paper selected Anhui Ningguo GangkouWan Reservoir as case, using the method of research analysis and face-to-face interviews, and compare the-before-and-after status of the local community situation with regards to the five elements.The results show that:1) the industrialization and urbanization trend is evident in the case; for the centralized resettlement community, there are more spiritual civilization construction and cultural activities. The community’s economic function and social welfare function has been realized; 2) by the effect of reservoir development, the surrounding communities’agricultural and sideline products processing industry and the tourism industry is good. But because of the limitation of the environment, the community’ industrial structure is single, and is coming to hollow; 3) The GangkouWan Reservoir community is folkway, whether the local integration or the centralized resettlement, the immigrants are easily to integrate into the new social network. And.the community’s neighborhood relations is good; and 4) immigrants who lost their land suffer from severer losses due to the loss of necessary work conditions.The practical implications are:1) provide training and supporting schemes to the affected residents,2) make use of the land resources in a reasonable manner.
