Research On The Architectural Features Of Chongwen Pagoda In Jingyang

Chongwen pagoda, located in Chongwen town, Jingyang county, Xianyang city, Shaanxi Province, is a brick building of Ming dynasty. Chongwen pagoda is very high, exquisite and well structured. Chongwen pagoda is of high acamedic value, but lack of relevant academic research. This thesis is to discuss its architectural characteristics.Based on the field research and surveying and mapping, combined with document literature, this thesis is discussed mainly from fourt parts:The first part makes a brief introduction of Chongwen pagoda including its site selection, historic evolution, spatial pattern and conservation status. The second part analyzes pagoda’s architectural features in detail, including its external shape, internal structure, material features and artistic characteristics. The third part is to explore the basic module, overall proportion and design methof of Chongwen pagoda from its planes and elevations. The fourth part mainly discusses the pagoda’s historic, artistic and scientific value as well as its protection.In terms of Chongwen pagoda’s spatial pattern, construction features, scale and module as well as its value and protection, this thesis has made some innovations. For instance, the site selection and construction of Chongwen pagoda paid much attention to the combination of large-scale natural environment and human spirit connotation; Chongwen pagoda is13-storey architecture, characterized by positively octagon plane, brick sleeve structure and art culture; Chongwen pagoda’s size scale decreases progressively from below upward, and its overall proportion is 1:4 with two design modules at the same time. Chongwen pagoda is of high historical value, scientific value and artistic value. The above will be of great significance to both the research on the design and construction of Chinese ancient brick pagoda and the inheritance and development of Chinese traditional architectural culture.
