The research based on the city’s historical images is more advanced in terms of urban history, urban morphology, and architectural features and so on, so as to compensate for the ones which based on cultural and historical documents in the past years, like words and images. At the same time, this research will enrich the content of urban morphology studies and presents the features of urban space and architecture which was or will be disappeared. This research mainly focuses on the historical images, as well as the literal materials. Combining the four elements which are "architecture (structure)", "location", "human" and "event", and locating the "architecture (structure)" in the urban space based on the "location" accurately. Then it leads to the interpretation on the morphology and characteristics of the "architecture (structure)"in the historical images. Through the interpretation and comparison of the streets, buildings (structures) on the old images, we can hackle a clear context of the city and the framework of the streets, locate the architectures accurately, what’s more, compare the spatial scale and formation features in traditional streets, which will provide some reference for the city development and architectural design.The paper is composed of six chapters, including "introduction", "Historical Records of Jimo", "the location, layout and historical images of the old Jimo", "analysis on the spatial scale and construction features of urban space", "thoughts on the city and architecture" and the "concluding remarks". The introduction describes the background, content, methods, purpose and significance of the paper, as well as the definition of "historical images". The second chapter puts the cultural and historical documents in order, which provides an overview of the ancient city of Jimo. In the third chapter, it presents the layout of the city space according to the historical images, by the same time, introduces the way of interpretation by historical images. Chapter four includes interpretation, comparison and analysis of urban space, streets scales, and materials as well as the features and methods of construction and so on, which were listed in great details. Individual thoughts about the urban and architectural theory in the study of historical images will be presented in the fifth chapter, which is also a summary of the contents on the experience and problems of the method above, as well as the gains and losses of the research.
