Highway construction zone signs convey the direction of driving and the information of distance. It’s necessary for cars to pass the construction zone safely, effectively and conveniently.Based on the drivers’ visual cognition characteristics, this paper analyzes drivers’visual recognition process and regulation of eye movements through indoor tests. And it optimizes the setting of traffic signs in construction zone.First of all, the author chooses the construction zone signs which are needed to study by comparing the different procedures in China. Through analyzing the visual cognition process of the driver and studyingthe driver’s eye movement rule, the author selects fixation points in zones,average fixation duration (seconds), initial fixation time, and average time from the one fixation to the next to evaluate the rationality and safety ofwhere the construction zone signs are decorated and how they are designed.Secondly, on the basis of analyzing the three elements of traffic signs, the author designs 15 different construction signs, speed limit signs, and linear inducing signs according to the domestic and foreign relevant specifications. He selects the corresponding visual indicators to analyze and study. Thus he concludes that the diamond yellow construction sign, blue linear sign, and round red speed limit sign has the best visual cognition.Afterwards, the author analyzes the various kinds of Chineseprocedures. Meanwhile, he considers the AmericanManual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices because of its authority. Then he designs 9 different indoor test plans. It is concluded that the recommended value of the setting of the signs.Finally, according to the vehicle running speed recorded by indoor driving simulator, through thePareto diagram of construction area velocity distribution and statistical description analysis, the author verifies the rationality and validity of the plan, which is based on the driver’s visual cognition features.Research results obtained in this paper provides reference for the planning and allocation of the guide sign system.
