| Street is one important kind of public spaces in a city. It concerns multiplex factors of politics, society, economy and culture in a specific environments. In the great process of social revolution and rapid urbanization in China, there exit acerb conflicting phenomena, which are called encroachments in this thesis, between the "public" and the "private". They reflect complex problems in cities, some of which are negative but also are demonstrations of how public spaces are being used in China.This paper devotes to study encroachments in present urban street spaces. It involves four chapters as below.The introduction explains the background of the research, describes objectives and contents. Then studies in the fields of street are reviewed thoroughly.Chapter 1 discusses the relationship between streets and urbans from a perspective of history and concept of the "public". It helps to understand the meanings of encroachments in street spaces, as a type of typical phenomenon in urban spaces, especially in the present ones.Chapter 2 reveals some forms and morphological characteristics of encroachments in street spaces, and tries to interpret the mechanism of them. Meanwhile, enlightments to designers are excepted to be discovered from those bewildering, bottom-up varieties.Chapter 3 investigates the evaluation of people who use street spaces and have direct correlation with encroachments in those streets. Conclusions and summaries are attempted to be provided through some specific methods.This paper deals with a type of specific, material phenomenon, and it expects that such issuses in urban spaces can acquire much more attentions. People related to creation of urban spaces, including architects, urban planners, land developers, researchers, government officials and users, are hoped to estimate current situations and what have been done in this field constantly, and to communicate achievements to the public, as a reply to the impact of globalization and modernization to our cities. This thesis makes an attemption to provide some references for exploring the patterns and revitalization mechanism of street, and for urban renewal and design. Methods in the research also have some meaning to the studies in the future. |
