Long highway tunnel construction is a complex process, involves more potential risk factors and more serious consequences will be caused if the risk happens due to its large-scale and the strong concealment of construction. Generally speaking, once the accident happens, significant economic losses and serious casualties will be led. Therefore, comprehensive analysis of the risk factors and good long highway tunnel risk assessment are of great guiding significance for reducing rail traffic engineering accidents and improving project risk management.Compared with general constructions, comp lexity and dynamic nature of long highway tunnel construction project makes its risk analysis more uncertain and more subjective. In this paper, the main reasons of long tunnel construction accidents were summarized on the basis of literature review and deep analysis of the mechanism and key features of long highway tunnel construction risk.Based on the understanding of major risk factors in the process of long highway tunnel construction and the practice of Mu Zhai Ling long highway tunnel, a risk assessment system was built, which consisted of eight factors of entrance slope, landslide, mud bay and water inrush, large deformation, environmental protection, supporting structure, inclined transportation and anti-slope drainage. The influencing factors of indicators were screened and sorted by importance based on Analytic Hierarchy Process, and the programmed calculating was realized on the platform of MATLAB. In the same time, the risk assessment towards each indicators was carried out based on geological data and risk assessment guidelines, the risk events degree was also settled, and risk assessment methods with perfection and systemic was formed. Finally the conclusion of risk assessment was achieved, and the improvement was summarized based on the conclus ion, thus the risk assessment example which has a guiding significance to long highway tunnel preliminary design stage risk assessment.
