Study On The Xiguan Grand House In Guangzhou

Xiguan Grand House in Guangzhou is a kind of traditional urban residential that appeared along with the mass construction of the new residences in the western suburb and Honam Island of Guangzhou in the late 1800s and the early 1900s. Originated from the traditional dwelling of Canton region, Xiguan Grand House is a typical model that represents the modernization of it. By researching the existing cases and the history of the new residences, the study generalizes the basic architecture features and the modernization progress of Xiguan Grand House, analyzing its uniqueness as luxury urban residential and the gradualness and diversity it shows during the modernization.This study consists of two parts:part one is the second chapter, discussing the historical background of Xiguan Grand House at the point of city development; part two is the third and fourth chapter, discussing Xiguan Grand House’s basic architecture features and its modernization at the architecture point of view, which is the key of this study.Chapter one is the review on the current study of Xiguan Grand House and introduction of this paper.Chapter two is the study on the the new residences in the western suburb and Honam island of Guangzhou in the late 1800s and the early 1900s. This chapter consists of three parts. The first part is the study on the development of the western suburb and Honam Island before the late 1800s. The second part is the study on the construction history of the new residences in the late 1800s and the early 1900s. The third part is the study on the structure and pattern of the typical neighborhoods of the new residences. According to these three researches, the study finds out the inner connection between Xiguan Grand House’s come into being and the city’s modernization.Chapter three is the basic study on the architecture form of Xiguan Grand House. This study included the discussion on Xiguan Grand House’s layout and facade, etc., from which generalizing the basic architecture features of it. Furthermore, by comparing with other traditional dwellings of Canton region, the study finds out the uniqueness of Xiguan Grand House as luxury modern urban residential.Chapter four is the study on the modernization of Xiguan Grand House. By analyzing the diversity of architecture features, the study generalizes the evolution process of Xiguan Grand House, and reasons from the modernization of life style and architecture technology, etc.
