Metropolitan area has become the dominant form of urbanization development in our country, and as the basic spatial units involved in regional competition, is receiving more and more attention. Hangzhou metropolitan area is in the leading position in regional development, and has an impact on the regional economy, society and culture. To carry out the metropolitan area spatial structure optimization study has an important practical significance on the planning and development of Hangzhou and the surrounding cities. Domestic and foreign research conclusion has reached a consensus on the core issue of urban spatial structure optimization, which is the integration of land use and transportation. Currently, the rail transit of Hangzhou metropolitan area is entering a fast and concentrate building stage, on the one hand, the advantages of rail transit compared with traditional transportation determine that it will have an impact on urban spatial structure based on the traditional transportation; on the other hand, by using rail transit to achieve orderly growth of metropolitan regions of space, will be the key approach and protection to optimize the spatial structure of the metropolitan area.In this thesis, based on combing the relevant theoretical research on the spatial structure of metropolitan regions and rail transit, by drawing on the experience of rail transit construction and spatial structure optimization of international metropolitan areas, summed up the experience of building rail transit system, the features of function spatial organization and the law of integration organization of the rail transit and functional space, then explore the rail-based optimization strategy of spatial structure of Hangzhou metropolitan area, relying on the rail transit system, optimize the function layout in the level of sphere layer, sector, axis and node, to guide the rational development of the spatial structure of metropolitan regions, and enhance competitiveness and sustainable development ability.
