By choosing the historical cognitive analysis on the Five Hills Area in Nantong from 1910s to 1930s as a starting point, this paper discusses on the tone of the historical orientation of the Five Hills Area as well as the cultural and natural landscape from the perspective of architecture history, in order to provide inspirations for both historical and practical values to the very renowned and sensitive area of Nantong besides the Yangtze River.By reviewing the morphological changes in area from Jiajing, Wanli reigns of Ming Dynasty to the late Qing Dynasty, supplemented by comparative analyses with the 1925 " Five Hills Engraving ", the old photographs from 1910s to 1930s and other evidence, this paper combines spatial pattern, spatial elements and internal connection of the historical evolution in order to seek the significance of the Gateway to the Five Hills and other important special nodes.This paper is divided into three parts:introduction, main text and conclusion. The first part introduces the research background, context and paths. The second part consists of two chapters, based on discussion of the historical position of" Five Hills Gurading of the City", it focuses on the spatial meaning of "Langshan Hill Gateway ". The third part is the conclusion, a brief summary of the experience of historical cognitive methods..
