The purpose of this paper is to be tested by research of the lightning cable with segmented diverters conduction lightning protection features striking distance and the scope of protection to assess its lightning, and lightning and lightning protection performance of conventional lines were compared. This paper developed a new type of the lightning cable with segmented diverters is used as a lightning protection device on airship, experimental study of the characteristics of lightning protection to the lightning cable is lack.The lightning protection cable is placed in bar-board a discharge structure,and the rod electrode is used to simulate the downward of lightning leader,with a bar to simulate the protected objects. During the test,adjusting the relative position of lightning cable with segmented diverters,rod electrode and protected object to obtain the lightning protection cable’s protection curve. Based on above experimental method and set lightning strike threshold of more than 90%,lightning protect curves of a 1.2m height lightning protection cable under positive and negative polarity is obtained and compared with the lightning protect curve of conventional metal wire by rolling ball method.In this paper,we had reseached the electric field distribution of the lightning cable in the process of the breakdown using the computer simulation technology. Considering the influence of the height of cable and electrode’s polarity,an Empirical formula was established,the Test results show that calculation result of lightning protection area under the positive polarity is close to ball method,which is different to the negative polarity. So the Rolling ball method has its drawbacks. An elliptical model is presented in this paper to calculate the lightning protection area.Research results show that the elliptical model is more accurate than the Rolling ball method,the lightning protection performance of 0.5mm Clearance of a cable is better than lmm Clearance.lightning protection properties of this new type cable can meet the requirements of lightning protection design,and can Provide a basis for an aerostat lightning protection design.
