Nowadays, with the arrival of the 4.0 industry, electrical load of the whole society have increased year by year. In order to ensure that the user can use electricity safely and reliably,government decided to develop smart power grids. In recent years, there are also some new breakthroughs in wireless network technology. With its advantages gradually being recognized, an increasing number of wireless network technology are applied in every part of the smart power grids. An important part of smart power grids is the intelligent substation with intelligent equipment. The stability of its operation determines whether users can use electricity or not. Substation monitoring system can monitor the operating state of essential equipment in real time, which greatly improve the quality and reliability of power supply.According to the current situation that wire transmission still be used in substation monitoring system and various drawbacks caused by the independent monitoring function of various functional units produced by different manufactures, this paper considered a number of existing factors, such as wireless transmission technology, strong electromagnetic interference in substation, the reliability, economy, expansibility of its system and so forth,adopted the technology of Zig Bee, computer, database and so on, then designed a set of intelligent substation monitoring system. The system is mainly composed of environmental monitoring subsystem, access control subsystem and running status monitoring subsystem according to their functions. The humiture of substation station, high-voltage power distribution room, accumulator room and master-control room can be monitored by environmental monitoring subsystem; the entrance guard intellectualization of substation door,high-voltage power distribution room and master-control room can be realized by using access control subsystem; running status monitoring subsystem can monitor transformer, SF6 gas state, water level of cable trench, cable head and so on. All of monitoring information will be displayed in upper computer in real time, saved to the local database and sent to the remote server through optical fiber.This paper analyzed the function that need to be completed by monitoring system and divided monitoring system into three parts: Zig Bee network unit, local monitoring center and remote service. The function of each part was described in detail. When designed the ZigBee network unit, Zig Bee nodes were distributed according to the specific transformer substation.And professional network simulation software OPNET was used to simulate. Slotted CSMA-CA algorithm which based on the difference was also optimized. This paper compared several common Zig Bee RF chips later and chose TI CC2530 chip to design the hardware circuit, software program and PC software of Zig Bee network nodes. Finally, the system was tested. The test results showed that the system has the merits of high reliability, low power consumption, low cost, easy to use and management, etc.
