With further expanding and deepening the study of domestic traditional residences, the study field has expanded from the aspects of types and styles to the aspects of villages, systems,and technology. It is not only the requirements of protecting, maintaining, and restoring the traditional buildings, but also an important factor of forming local unique residences and the culture carrier of intangible heritage.Zhongtou town, Jiaxian of Henan province, is the fifth historical and cultural town. Until now, it keeps a large quantity of traditional residences with local distinct building features, which reflect the development status and value embodiment of local construction technology. By establishing protection planning with the participation of graduate students of architecture college in Zhongzhou University, as well as local traditional residences restoration design, it is possible to summarize local residences features and construction technology.The paper, treats the building clusters in Zhongtou town and its local traditional residences as research objects, and from the perspectives of building, geography,cultural background and local architect, it summarizes local construction convention and features. Meanwhile, because I participate in renovating and designing Zhongtou residential building clusters in Ming and Qing dynasties, by visiting construction field and collecting repair data of traditional residences in Linfeng village, Tangjie town,Xia city, I recorded, arranged, analyzed and summarized the construction technology and process of local residences in details, which offers collection of previous data and argument of the paper. The paper is divided into 5 parts:The first part is introduction, mainly introducing the status of protecting and maintaining traditional residences, clearing the research method and aim of the paper thus forming research framework of protecting and maintaining Zhutou building clusters of Ming and Qing dynastiesThe second part treats traditional residences of Zhongtou town as its research object, introducing construction features and practice in details, which lay foundationfor local construction and maintenance.The third part is based on the cognition on preservation and restoration theory of our country, aiming to solve the problems found in the process of visiting construction field in Linfeng village in Tangjie town, Jiaxian, and the local architects’ interview. Besides, it not only discuss the maintenance technology of building clusters of Ming and Qing dynasties, but also briefly discuss the later maintenance practices considering actual situation, thus providing theoretical guidance for protecting the Zhongtou building clusters of Ming and Qing dynasties in a long term.The fourth part combines several related works of local residences which has been participated by graduates, and summarizes protection and conservation methods,including overall protection, environment improvement, as well as the improvement and maintenance of yard pattern, shape, and monomer.The fifth chapter, on the basis of summarizing Zhong tou residences projects, it proposes protection and maintenance strategy of different levels directing at the conservation problems of local traditional residences.
